Do you like scary movies?

I’m not into slasher/ horror movies because they don’t do much for me.
But I can remember 2 which kept me interested and even made me jump a few times.

Suspense, and bad acting,  it’s a winning combination.

Here they are:

A year after a severe emotional trauma, Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) goes to North Carolina to spend some time exploring caves with her friends; after descending underground, the women find strange cave paintings and evidence of an earlier expedition, then learn they are not alone: Underground predators inhabit the crevasses, and they have a taste for human flesh.

When a news crew decides to trail a brave fire-fighting team, they never suspect that the first call for help they respond to that night may be their last.   22. The Descent is most excellent. As a kid the Exorcist kept me from sleeping without fear for a year (in fact I’m watching the uncut version now). Try the Exorcist III. It really presses the boogeyman buttons.

  24. I agree with Vixen: The Haunting, the early 1960’s b/w version with Richard Johnson & Claire Bloom. Also, Kuroneko (Black Cat), a Japanese film from 1968 based on an ancient legend.

  26. The movie didn’t scare me as a whole but the scene in Jaws when the pull the shark tooth out of the bottom of the boat while scuba diving and the dead guy’s head pops out freaked me out when I was 9.

  35. The flying monkeys in Wizard of Oz put me off seeing any sort of scary movie for my entire life. I never knowingly watch blood, guts, gore or people popping out of the shadows unless I can cover my ears and eyes sufficiently. That said, Silence of the Lambs and Jurassic Park were right up there on the list. Old scary movies are fine if they are screened by MST3000.

  39. A girlfriend and I had a rare afternoon free without our kids and decided to go to a movie. We agreed that Tommy Lee Jones, Woody Harrelson, (can’t remember who else) were good actors and whatever they were in must be pretty good.

    We were stunned at less than 2 minutes in at No Country For Old Men and laughed hysterically that the least likely people on the planet would end up making such a blunder. We felt like two old church ladies right about then.

  48. my buddies & I got dropped off by our parents when were about 10 years old to a Monster Movie Marathon at the local theater. one of the movies was ‘The Tingler’ with my man Vincent Price … when they showed the movie theater scene, where the Tingler got loose in the theater & Price told everyone to scream for their lives (’cause the Tingler was paralyzed by loud noises) you bet your ass we all screamed … like little girls!

  49. When I was 14 I made the mistake of walking into the room while my dad was watching ‘It’ by Stephen King.
    I still have a morbid fear of clowns and sewer systems to this day.
    (Also Watership Down scared the hell out of me when I was 9. Imagine being a little girl who loves and adores bunnies and your dad thinks that it’s fabulous idea to show you a movie he liked in collage. Actually, I think that I can pin the blame for all scary movies on my dad. – -;)

  51. The Haunting (The Original based on the “The Haunting of Hill House”) I was eight when I saw it, scared the crap outta me. The remake had some moments as well…especially when those windows turn into eyes. And when the flip book pointed to the fireplace, that was chilling. Plus Bruce Dern had a cameo in it.

  54. As a kid the original ‘Invaders from Mars’. A little bit older and ‘The Haunting’ from ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ by Shirley Jackson terrified me.
    As an adult ‘The Hitcher’ with Rutger Hauer.
    These days it’s the nightly news with Killary Clinton.

    I’ve never seen the Exorcist, the Omen or Rosemary’s Baby.

  57. Psycho. To this day I will not stay in a hotel by myself, and if DH is out of town, I don’t get in the shower at home without setting all sensor alarms and my Mosburg in the bathroom.

    The birds. Long story. Got to answer the trick or treaters.

  61. Aliens, LOL. Reminds me of when I was dating my wife. I thought aliens was another star wars/ star trek/ movie. Scared the crap out of her.

    I had to promise to never do that again.

  62. Must agree with the comment above about the Wizard of Oz. As a 12 y/o I was so scared by the flying monkeys (in a theater) I ran out screaming. My sister rescued me.

  63. ‘PLAY MISTY FOR ME’
    I fisrt saw this in college around ’72 or ’73 in the campus auditorium filled with many drunken stones …. When the woman comes out from behind the curtain and stuck the detective in the chest with a pair of scissors people dropped their jugs of wine onto the cement floor. The sounds of breaking glass only added to the effect …. For the next few daze students were opening their dorm room doors with …. um, great care ….

  67. I was thirteen when I made the mistake of watching “The Exorcist”. My Mother was a devout Catholic of the Mexican brand…they tend to be very traditional with no holds barred beliefs and she raised me that way. So I thought I knew all about Demons and the Devil, but that movie brought a traumatizing new perspective….didn’t sleep soundly for months! Also, Texas Chainsaw Massacre. When Leatherface slams that steel door after wacking that poor dude who was still convulsing!

  68. Invaders from Mars (1953, In Cinecolor) – Cheesy by today’s standards, I know, but the plot twist at the end freaked my little 10-year old mind out.

    Also Blue Velvet (1986) – Mainly because I know that monsters like Frank do exist in real life.

  70. Carpenters The Thing. Saw it when it first came on cable. I was probably 9 or 10. Watched by my self at night & didn’t sleep for the next week. My favorite movie to this day,but even now,once or twice a year ill have a dream about it that freaks me out a little. Same with the Nimoy Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.

  71. I watched 5 horror flicks leading up to this Halloween: Descent, Cabin in the Woods, Exorcist, House on Haunted Hill and Psycho. LAUGHED more than anything, wasn’t scared once. What’s wrong with me??

    However, as a kid I watched Halloween that scared the living hell out of me and to this day I don’t dare watch it again. I’d probably laugh though, can’t remember what was so scary.

  73. What? Has no one ever seen Wait Until Dark with Audrey Hepburn? Cripes! If you don’t jump out of your seat at that ONE SCENE towards the end, you must already be dead. Even when I know it’s coming, I jump AND scream. Great movie!But, yeah, I agree about the flying monkeys and The Birds.

  79. Phantasm, that flying eyeball creeped me out. And I agree about Play Misty For Me, it’s the only Clint Eastwood movie that I definitely do not like since I saw it back in the 70’s. My daughter hates Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein, it scared her when she was a kid. Invaders From Mars is a truly creepy classic scary Martian movie from the early 50’s. A friend of mine pretended a hand was coming up out of a grave when we were walking home after dark through the graveyard (I was 10 and lived right across the street from the cemetery) after seeing Premature Burial in 1963, he thought it was funny as hell, I don’t think I ever ran faster in my life scared to death that the dead were about to get me. Thanks a lot Steve.

  81. Back to “The Birds.”

    That movie didn’t really get to me until the first week in our new home. There were very few homes built yet in our subdivision in the forest – in the middle of nowhere. We still had no drapes on our windows, and it was a gloomy late September day.

    I was raised smack dab in the city so I never really saw many black birds.

    When I looked out the window because of hearing loud sounds, I saw our entire acre covered with blackbirds. The immediate sky overhead was near blackened with the critters. The chill I felt through my whole pregnant body was awful. I wanted to throw up, run, didn’t know what to do.

    I phoned my MIL who lived in the area all her life. She laughed her ass off at my concern about the birds. Apparently she never saw The Birds. Nor, for that matter, did she believe that I saw a brown bear meander through our yard another time, nor did she think a spider the size of a silver dollar was anything of which to be scared. Well, she probably was correct about the bear…it probably was the rear end of a huge raccoon, tail down, heading to the neighbor’s cornfield.

  83. @super toe – “Burnt Offerings” The chauffeur in that movie still gives me the creeps. AGREE 100%

    “Snow White” – I was 6 years old. The witch scared the piss out of me – easy to do when I was 6.

  84. Night of the Living Dead… we saw it at a Drive-In on a super hot/humid summer night, and the adults were sitting in Lawn Chairs and we little kids were laid across the hood of the car with a blanket on it.
    As the movie played on, we slowly moved to inside the car and SCREAMED when someone walked past returning to their car with popcorn. That was a freak out!

    The Haunting(1960s), The Shining, The Conjuring, Legend of Hell House, The Thing(John Carpenter), Cape Fear(Robert DeNiro), Alien, Let Me In, Goodnight Mommy(german), etc. I could go on and on. Horror films, and Slasher movies were our Family bonding moments. 🙂

    Trilogy of Terror is still way up there too! (for a Made for TV film)

  86. Also The Day Of The Triffids, a great B&W English scifi classic from the mid 60’s about man eating plants that are attempting to conquer the world and especially England. And any of the horror films with Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre and Vincent Price like The Raven, A Comedy Of Terrors and the aforementioned Pit and The Pendulum etc. And nobody mentioned any of the Hammer horror movies with Peter Cushing and Peter Lee, those are scary as hell.

    Vincent Price too… who, I had the honor of meeting one time. YEP, I am SOOO Lucky. He was so nice, and flattered that I knew his films. I’ll never forget that.
    The Abominable Dr. Phibes, with the crazy wardrobe for Vulnavia (so cool, so cool) , The House that Dripped Blood. The Pit and the Pendulum. I own them all.

  93. LBS, you forgot Darren McGavin in Tribes the made for TV movie where he played a Marine Corps DI giving hell to Jan Michael Vincent as a reluctant recruit. What’s even scarier are the baby boomers who were traumatized by Old Yeller and Bambi and The Yearling, I truly hate the last movie, they made us watch it in HS for literature class. Gimme a friggin break.

    Gross and Evil films that freaked me out.
    Rosemary’s Baby 1968
    Poltergeist 1982
    Exorcist 1973

    Hate slasher films and will never watch Exorcist again. YIKES! Some realities don’t have to be seen to be believed.

  105. The Crawling Eye (1958)

    I was 2 when it came out but watched it on television a few years later. Scared the shit out of me.
    It’s really a lame-ass movie. lol. Good for a laugh now.

    I hate horror movies. Youtube keeps suggesting them – I think it’s a satanic thing.

  108. The Legend of Boggy Creek. Actually visited Fouke, Arkansas, in 2003 and met one of the principal characters. Actually planning to revisit Fouke again, but the legendary Smokey Crabtree passed away. 😢
