WaExaminer: A federal court ruled Tuesday that 28 of North Carolina’s state House and Senate districts were constructed in a way that violated the Constitution. The three-judge panel of the Middle District Court said the districts will have to be redrawn by mid-March of next year and Tar Heel State voters in those localities will have to vote in special primary and general elections by next fall.
“This gives the State a total of seven months from the time the districts were held to be unconstitutional, which is longer than it took the 2011 legislature to redistrict the entire state,” the order states.
Over the summer, the court ruled lawmakers had relied on residents’ race when developing the boundaries for the state legislature’s districts. The state has 120 House districts and 50 Senate districts, separate from the U.S. House districts, of which it has 13. Approximately one-sixth of the total 120 state House districts were found to be constructed unconstitutionally.
I agree. Make the districts with high inner-city populations smaller.
Either that, or give every district equal weight regardless of population.
Also, nobody on welfare gets a vote.
GREAT idea, no welfare voters. Brilliant. For good measure, go back 6 months. Voters would have to have been off welfare for 6 months to be able to vote. Then, they can’t go back on welfare until 6 months after voting.
Let a Kindergarten class draw the districts. That way, no bias can be claimed, and the map will be pretty, pretty, pretty.
When I lived in Georgia Newt Gingrich was my House Rep. Then the still Democrat Georgia legislature re-drew Newt’s district going from my northern Atlanta suburb all the way to Savannah picking up black voters. In some areas, the 4th district was one block wide.
This, of course, was legal. And that, boys and girls, is how idiot Cynthia McKinney beat Newt Gingrich.
Oil Field- Great idea! LOL!
I say we get someone to take a sip of coffee, stand them in front of the map, tickle the person and where ever the coffee spittle lands, those are the districts.
I visited my hairdresser this morning– a nice, conservative, Christian girl whose family has been in ranching for more than 100 years. She told me she really believes only property owners, no matter how small the property, should be voters.
Page O’Turnerr ; Same bullcrap in calif. They redrew the state so now the dems have a SUPER majority with a looney dem gov. And the majority of the majority are mexicans. And the left wing judges appointed by the left wing upheld this as legal.
I get out if I was younger. I have stipulated in my will that no money is to be spent in this craphole!
Think this state was off it’s rocker before, just wait. Say goodbye to your guns, hello to “fees” on everything.
What has the Constitution to say about North Carolina’s districts?
Racial gerrymandering has been the rule for 70 years, or so, and if eliminated would do away with half the “African-Americans” in Congress.
The hypocrisy is breathtaking.
izlamo delenda est …
DRAIN THE FEDERAL COURT SWAMP. Obaby has been busy stacking them. This federal redistricting has already been imposed upon Virginia.
It is a constitutionally mandated responsibility of congress to determine what the federal courts are constructed. Add enough bench vacancies to overpower what obaby has done. It’s devious and self serving.
I’m still pissed off about what they’ve done to Virginia.
@BEG – considering that a lot of home owners in my neighborhood had hitlery signs in their yard, I’m not sure that’s such a great idea.
In Florida we have the District 5 which used to go from Jacksonville (along I4) to Orange County. Now, it goes from Jacksonville to Leon County (along I10). We got sucked up into that redrawn District 5. Fortunately, Corene “Go Gathas” Brown was beaten to a pulp by Al Lawson.
I’m not crazy about being in that District, but, at least Al Lawson is an improvement.
I can’t believe there’s no comment here from Jerry Manderin!
🙂
Base the districts on two things only: Number of American citizens of voting age!
The redistricting was approved by Obama/Holder Dept of justice many years ago after the 2010 census, was approved by the NC Supreme Court TWICE, years ago, and now a federal court is saying Obama/Holder were wrong, the NC Supreme Court were wrong TWICE, and that new maps have to be drawn and approved by March, elections in November, one year before the midterms will be held. This will cost counties millions to hold a special election after holding elections that Obama/Holder approved. This is Government Gone Wild on steroids! This kind of insanity is why people like Donald J. Trump get elected. People are sick and tired of government overreach! STOP IT!!!!
BTW, that 7 month thing?
The newly elected (21 days ago) legislature convenes some time in late January after being sworn in. That gives them 7 weeks to re-draw the maps Obama/Holder aproved.
NC should file motions in Fed Court to delay this until after Jan 20. Then redraw the map to eliminate the minority districts. Problem solved.
its only ok when Democrats redo districts here in NC.
This will be overturned.
