1962 – I’ve Got a Secret “Future Car”

I love the bar in the back! and the TV.

I guess they thought in the future everyone would be drunk and watching TV as they drove around…. Oh, wait.

  1. My 1st submarine was commissioned in 1960, the Tullibee.
It was an experimental unit that was designed to be mostly
automated. It even had an automatic depth keeping system
to reduce the number of operators on watch.
Let’s just say the automatic depth keeping system was
de-energized as a hazard to the crew…….Some of those
early ’60’s “inventions” were hazards to man. We retired
    the boat in ’88.

  2. Big deal I had a 1970 Hornet.
My dad bought the car and didn’t like it. Really? So he gave it to me.
The base model. In grey. Straight 6. No extras. Red plastic upholstery. I forgot to put a 50/50 mix of anti freeze in the radiator. Coldest winter ever.
    The block cracked.
    Dad was pissed
He called me a Dumb ass

  3. @reboot – did it have that non functioning contraption what was supposed to take the wobble out of the shaft to the screw making it quieter. I recall the control box being by the hatch into the ER, which many people hit their head on. And one night during refit, nobody saw nothing, but a couple of MMs threw it overboard. It might still be there at Polaris Point. or where it was.

  4. I’m still waiting for the flying car Popular Science told me I’d have by now.

Actually, after witnessing people’s driving skills over the years I’m glad that was never a reality.

  5. Back in the day my friend had a Ford Econoline with a quarter keg draft system hidden well. The tap and spill drain basin was right over the engine cover. Mostly used at drive-ins on Friday nights when inn HS.

  6. Interesting that some if the features on that thing made it to cars 50 years later, but my gawd it is hard to believe that serving that ugly was created the same year as the beautiful 1962 Checrolet Bel Air bubble top coupe.

  7. Mortgages, back in the day – it wasn’t illegal to have a keg operating like that in your vehicle.

In Texas, the driver was able to have an open alcoholic drink up until sometime in the 80s. Before that, you had to fuck up driving several times before they threw you in jail. The spirited drink in the console was not an offense in itself.

I believe it was the 90s before open containers weren’t allowed for anyone. Yeah, a lot of beers got handed to passengers before that one came around.
