In a piece appearing in the New York Time’s Dance section, Gia Kourlas penned a defense of awarding $45,000 from the National Endowment to the Arts to Ann Carlson to film her production of “Doggie Hamlet.”
The writer asks “Is it silly? Is it pretentious? Is it art?” with no obvious intention of being of ironic.
This defense of the frivolous comes the same week as the Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney sent a warning letter out to the various federal agencies to prepare for significant cuts to their budgets.

I wonder whether as simple due diligence the feds send people to the states once a year to ask them to list the projects that received money and why did they get it. Having to explain this or piss Jesus and any other number of crap items could make for a very, very long day for all concerned. I would like to see the National Endowment for the Arts cut entirely from our country’s budget. And PBS. And the EPA. And the Department of Education. And the Department of Energy. And that’s just for starters.
Is Ann Carlson a well off Liberal, who simply needs NEA money so her social circle will see her as Legitimate ? Or is she a struggling New York artist in need of Contraceptives thru 2017 ?
