In honor of Benito’s Mel Blanc story (in the comments here) we’re going to post this classic Mel Blanc “Sy the Mexican” sketch.

  1. @Benito – I visited Mel at his home in the Palisades mid-80s, knew the girl who lived next door (he let their family use his pool all the time). Very nice guy, I still have an autographed photo. Nice to hear your story.

Should I have written that all in caps? 😉

  2. Archive this, before the PC police destroy all copies.
Ditto all Jose Jimenez and Topo Geggio bits from Ed Sullivan.
They’ve going to destroy all traces of Al Jolson’s “Mammy”

  3. I miss the comedy shows we had in the 50’s and 60’s.
nothing like them on TV today. No Benny, Burnette, Berle and so many more. Then we had entertainment, not sleaze.

  4. Jack Benny, Groucho Marx, Fibber McGee and Molly, along with The Bickersons with Don Ameche are some of the best and funniest comedy shows ever. And the good thing all those old time radio shows are still on XM’s old time radio station. They all still crack me up and most of the humor is from a bygone age when humor was really funny, and not the contrived and often profane crap they call humor nowadays. You can still buy Amos and Andy on CD’s, I know because I bought it for my 88 year old dad for Christmas, he loves it.

  5. @geoff the aardvark: Here’s a knock-knock joke from back in the day that nobody gets anymore. But you will.

    “Knock-knock.”

    “Who’s there?”

    “Don Ameche.”

    “Don Ameche who?”

    ♫ “I’ll be Don Ameche in a taxi, Honey…” ♪

    🙂

  6. Vietvet, I got it. LOL

Not too many people know who Don Ameche was.

I loved the old movies besides the old comedy on TV. Heck, I remember my parents listening to Red Skelton on the radio, and I would be afraid. Somehow I knew skeletons were scary, equated them with a talking skeleton on the radio.
