CA School’s rat infestation leads to mite bites on students

EAG:

VILLA PARK, Calif. – Officials at Villa Park Elementary were forced to call an exterminator after students broke out with itchy red bumps from mites that live on rats while at school.

“It just felt like these little things just crawling all around me on my body. I could see them crawling on my desk, everywhere, on my books, on my neighbor’s desk,” 11-year-old student Mika Slagle told CBS Los Angeles. “It’s just scary. It’s just worrying to worry about your health.”

The fifth-grader said she discovered itchy red bumps on her back in April, and later learned that the bumps were bites from bugs that live on rodents.

“They figured out that if there are rodent mites which are what these bites are caused by, there has to be rodents,” Slagle said. “So they started setting traps, which led to lots of rats being found.”  read more

  1. Ahem. The primary source for this story are quotes from an 11 year old.

    This is “professional news” now.

But still more credible than “sources” at the NYT.

  2. The Plague is alive in prairie dog towns in the mid west.

How do you sterilize an entire school?

Moons ago, I went to one of our submarines for a walkabout tour. After
contacting a couple of people, I went into the Chief’s Quarters to
see their Chief of The Boat. As a friend when a hand was offered
he didn’t take the shake. Then he asks me to make sure I clean my
hands with soap after I left because they’d had at least three or more cases of flesh eating bacteria break out on the boat. That creeped me the phuck out.

  3. Zonga, Just my thought – mites or fleas?
Too bad – Villa Park, right next to Anaheim Hills, was one of the more affluent and upscale communities at one time.
    Doesn’t seem so now.
