Does the name ring a bell? Baseball fans, anything?
Anthony Young was the Mets pitcher who holds the Major League record for the most consecutive losses without a win, 27.
Watching this happen during the 92-93 seasons was oddly entertaining. It was sad, frustrating, interesting, comedic and dramatic. Young was a great young arm and he handled it well. During his losing streak he had an ERA around 3.5, which is remarkable considering all the losses he mounted.
Bad luck seemed to follow him wherever he went that season. Even games that seemed like he was going to break through, something odd would happen – a throwing error, someone not covering a bag, someone tripping. It was eerie.
It took an Eddie Murray walk-off double to snap the losing streak. If you watch the clip the voodoo almost continued. As Ryan Thompson sped around third, heading for home, he almost faceplants. Somehow, Thompson kept his footing and the curse was over.
It was as if they won the World Series.
I remember something like that. 27 consecutive loses, that’s a tough stretch. Too bad it wasn’t for the Yankees or the Red Sox.
Sounds like the dems current election streak.
But RIP Mr Young, so young
remember that …. poor guy
at least he had a major league ‘career’ … sad that it was … something most would love to experience
Yet another baseball player dying at a young age from a brain tumor.
🙁
Didn’t follow baseball during his career, but 51 is way too young to die. Cancer is a vicious and unfair disease.
Lost a friend a few months back at a young age. Still trying to figure out how a young woman who did everything right healthwise just up and died a month or two before her first grandchild was to be born.
It’s part of God’s plan and even though I don’t understand it I guess I’m not supposed to.
God be with his family and a big thanks to him for living and struggling in the public eye while demonstrating persistence and good humor. His teammates liked him although he could have become a pariah.
Heard an announcer say, after his 14th loss; you have to be a good pitcher to lose that many in a row. A bad one would be gone.
Do the Mets hold all of these kind of records?
So young and so black.
