PJW: Why Modern Architecture SUCKS

How did we go from this:

To this?

 Aesthetic Terrorism.

Aesthetic ugliness encourages bad behavior. Municipal pride evaporates

  1. We used to refer to that example in the third photo as the “Fuck You School of Architecture”. As for the second photo, for every crack-pot architect, there is some poor structural engineer who is tasked with trying to make his idiotic ideas work in the real world.

  2. Call ugly things beautiful, destroy meaningful art, destroy the family unit, destroy religion, destroy morality, destroy civility, destroy education, normalize pornography and sexual deviant behavior, encourage polarization, crime, and dependence.

That’s why we can’t have nice architecture. The Communist plan.

  3. The college of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio has a gorgeous campus.

Then in 1969 they hire a bunch of New York morons to tear down the old chapel and build a new one.

    Old Chapel:

Here’s the hideous piece of shit they replaced it with:

A windowless cement block house for a church that was originally supposed to be underground of all things! Good architecture will blend in with its surroundings. This thing looks like a jail and is completely out of place with anything, anywhere except maybe Queens!

  4. I think PJW nailed it though, with the psychological aspects of modern architecture. In the olden days they built massive churches but the entrance drew one in. I don’t speak Architecture but there is something sinister in method.
These behemoths defy one to enter and question the authorities within. He’s on to something. Cmon in Winston.

  5. I hate to admit this, but one thing I DO admire about Europe (at least in Germany) is their buildings–many regular office buildings look pretty and even a city mall looks nice, like a large and fancy house, unlike the shiny giant boxes we have.

  6. I’m still trying to figure out why the Vatican built a giant speaking hall that the Pope sits in, that looks like a snake head with Jesus looking like he is burning in hell (giant backdrop “art”.

  7. Air Force Academy needs to drug test whomever designed their gawd awful chapel. I’ve suggested they surround it with trailer houses to attract a tornado. They wouldn’t have to get any permits, no environmental impact statements, no meetings, and it’s possible there’d be nothing to clean up.

  8. what a life. Leave a high rise apartment in the morning , meander through a large crowd of rabble onto the subway to arrive at your meaningless job in a cube midway up another high rise office complex to possibly contribute to the bureaucracy.

Outdoors, All you may smell are bus fumes and rotting garbage.

Then you get to your restaurant that has a 45-60 minute wait for bad food and a snotty waiter that you’d better not cross.

I did various elements of this in DC and Boston.
It is a miserable existence. Corrective action had to be taken.

I was put in flashback mode last Sunday when we went
To D.C. to see an MLB game.

Miserable existence. I’m happy to flourish in the country.
    No thank you.

  9. Zonga is right.

It’s part of the plan by the communist party to destroy Western Civilization.

    22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”

    23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”

And, of course, they added building architecture to their “new art”.

  10. @grool:

That is FUGLY, alright! Coming up in FUGLY will be Osh^thead’s library in the Jackson Park area, Chicago.

Google it; you’ll see some similarities.

  11. I can tell you it caused people to quit the school at the time. The fact that is was originally intended to be underground made people wonder who they were praying to! People who see it for the first time just are horrified. I know the first time I showed my kids even they knew how wrong it was!

  12. Back in 1980, Tom Wolfe wrote “From Bauhaus to Our House.” About modern architecture creating slums, and cigar box buildings.
The architects hated him. But I think Tom was right.

  13. I have been to Frank Lloyd wrights falling water. He attempted to blend into the natural beauty and bring that beauty into the house. It’s a masterpiece. Building lego buildings on a massive scale isn’t the same. At all. Not even close.

  14. They can’t compete.
    Simple.
Look how “art” turned to shit after Michaelangelo, Rafael, Titian, Reubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Bellini, &c. In only a few instances have artists come close to achieving anything remotely as beautiful – not that they had no talent, but they simply can’t compete.
When you can ascend no further, you go off on a tangent – sideways – so to speak.

    izlamo delenda est …
