Mets Issue Scummy Statement About Tim Tebow

The Mets say they signed Tebow because he’s, in effect, a side show.

Great.

Screw you for saying that. It might be the truth, but why say it now? Especially since Tebow is doing well with the St. Lucie Mets since his promotion.

I’ve lost respect for the Mets front office. (Full disclosure. I haven’t had much respect for that front office in decades.)

NY Post-

Alderson is starting to come clean on the Tebow signing. The Mets didn’t ink the former quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner because they saw some hidden talent in him. It wasn’t a “baseball decision,” as Alderson said at the time.

“Look, we signed him because he is a good guy, partly because of his celebrity, partly because this is an entertainment business,” Alderson said. “My attitude is ‘Why not?’ ”

The Mets promoted the 29-year-old Tebow to Single-A Port St. Lucie last Sunday, despite his meager .220/.311/.336 slash line with three home runs in 64 games with Single-A Columbia. Alderson told reporters then Tebow’s low chase rates and improving exit velocities were indications he was ready for a higher level.

“I was searching a little bit for some rational explanation for promoting him,” he conceded.

“Actually if you look at some of the more esoteric statistics, he actually does pretty well: He doesn’t really chase [pitches outside the strike zone],” Alderson said. “Some of the fundamental things you are looking for in your player, aside from athleticism and so forth. He has command of the strike zone, power — those are things he can do.”

Tebow has gotten off to a good start with Port St. Lucie, going 5-for-9 with a home run and two RBIs in his first three games.

!snip!

I hope there is a Roy Hobbs ending to this Tebow story. He deserves it.

  1. Tebow was treated poorly by the Charleston River Dogs a couple of weeks ago, mocked
by their mascot, taunted by fans, particularly because of his faith. Apparently they issued an “apology” like we’re sorry BUT it’s all in good fun…..
Kapernak is lauded as a principled hero when he takes a knee for his perceived faux injustice, Tebow is scornfully mocked when he kneels in humble reverence to his Lord and savior.

Matthew 10:22. You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

  2. Ya know, I really hope the man’s baseball skills continue to develop, to the point he can no longer be dismissed as a sideshow attraction for the Mets. good luck Tim. Until then you can continue to go to the ballpark and get paid for it (I think I heard that in a movie once)

  3. I moved my Charleston RiverDogs cap to the bottom of the stack (under the SeaDogs, ValleyCats, Mudcats, YardGoats, RiverBandits, TinCaps andBiloxi Shuckers caps). Tebow didn’t deserve that treatment, and the RiverDogs made a bunch of $$ on attendance when Tim came to town to play.

  4. What is there about NYC? It stinks to high heaven, loaded with arrogant, obnoxious people and the NYT. I visted NYC more than 40 years ago. I loved seeing the famous landmarks. Would have enjoyed it more if New Yorkers didn’t live there.

  5. See? This kind of attitude is why the Mets are losing. Karma. Meanwhile, everyone knew the who evers and the other who evers signed up Michael Sam – simply because he’s the ghey. That was some sideshow! AND a soap opera! lol
