  1. It looks to slice of a lot of bark from the trunk. I was taught in biology class that the bark contains the mechanisms for moving nutrients up from the root. And that one sure way of killing a tree was to slice that bark off, in a narrow strip, all the way around the trunk.

If that old biology lecture was right, the otherwise handy gizmo shown here causes considerable injury to the tree. Perhaps fatal injury.

  2. Youtube search the Caterpillar 501 Harvesters. Like a log loader with an attachment that cuts the tree, strips it in place and saws it again to a specific length.

Then go watch “Sometimes A Great Notion”. Where we’ve come in 40 years.

  3. What’s the purpose? Is is removing branches before the tree is cut down? I hope so, otherwise, as Mr. Fessenfelder said above, that’s a dead tree standing.

If he’s just trimming, his blade is waaaayy too close.

  4. Haven’t watched the video, but that looks like a birch, and most lower birch branches will break off easily. I’ve been cutting wood and putting up wood the past few days as winter is coming. Mostly standing dead. A lot of those branches break off as the tree comes down or when it hits the ground. (hard hats recommended for felling). This could be a good tool in the right situation, I guess.

  5. I’ve worked on those things. You know there are some old loggers that see that and are amazed. My 13 year old grandson is a little guy but he is really interested in robotics, and drones, and 3D printing. Get your kids going that direction, that’s where the jobs will be.

  6. Five years ago I did a news interview for one of these, and it was a good product . Good for Tall fan palms with straight trunks and nothing else ! They damage trees by opening them to Fungus and Boring insects !

Luckily, I was young enough of mind to catch the digital machining world. Not quite sure how that happened. No matter. You ever make it down here bring your Grandson with you. We’ll train him up and when we are really old we cam sweep the floors for him. LOL. I’m good with that.
