Female president of Ithaca College draws scrutiny for 16-year-old sex abuse conviction

College Fix: In #MeToo age, new female president of Ithaca College draws scrutiny for 16-year-old sex abuse conviction.

Five months ago, Shirley Collado was tapped as the new president of Ithaca College. Today, she’s making headlines for a different reason. The New York Daily News reports:

The president of Ithaca College in upstate pleaded no contest to sexually abusing a patient when she worked at a psychiatric hospital nearly two decades ago.

Shirley M. Collado, who worked at The Center at the Psychiatric institute of Washington in D.C., was accused of having a five-month sexual relationship with a female patient who was undergoing therapy for post-traumatic stress in 2000, The Ithacan reported.

While Collado was convicted of one count of misdemeanor sexual abuse in August 2001 after pleading no contest, she has maintained her innocence, saying she didn’t have the legal, financial and emotional resources to fight the case.

The conviction may be nearly two decades old, but news of it comes at a time when old sexual assault claims can derail careers.

Collado was tapped to replace Tom Rochon, who was essentially forced out as president of Ithaca College by social progressive protesters who claimed he was racist even though he agreed to all their demands to improve the campus environment for students of color.

Collado told The Ithacan she is innocent.

“I didn’t have the legal resources; I didn’t have the financial resources to, and I didn’t have the emotional wherewithal to really take this on the way I would have preferred,” Collado told The Ithacan. “So I took a different route. And like many people in this country, young people in this country, people of color, people who don’t have networks, that was me. This happens all the time, where you make this really difficult choice, even if it goes completely against the truth of who you are.” more

  1. ” This happens all the time, where you make this really difficult choice, even if it goes completely against the truth of who you are.”

Thinks the gay and transgender as they continue to deny.

  2. to her bio, Collado is “an expert in organizational behavior and development [and] has held executive leadership roles in higher education for more than 16 years at private and public institutions, as well as in the nonprofit sector. Trained as a clinical psychologist at Duke University, Collado specializes in the intersection of race, ethnicity, and gender in trauma experiences and treatment.”

Talk about liberal qualifications. “specializes in the intersection of race, ethnicity and gender in trauma”

    That says it all.

  3. So in her own words, her entire career and life is built on her dishonesty, she was an emotional wreck that coukd not cope, she lied to get out of defending her actions, and she continues to this day to re-victimize her patient by accusing her publicly of being a liar, not to be believed, #metoo.

And shes passing mental and emotional judgement on other???

  4. How can I be a victim? Let me count the ways:
    1. I didn’t have the legal resources.
    2. I didn’t have the financial resources (poor).
    3. I didn’t have the emotional wherewithal (fragile).
    4. I was young (and supposedly innocent in the ways of the world).
    5. I was black (race card!).
    6. I didn’t have a network (whose fault is that?).
    7. I admitted to something that goes against the truth of who I am (I was forced to lie–that makes me a victim!).

And she gets named to be president of Ithaca? Another institution of higher education circles the drain.

  5. Not to be the turd in the punch bowl here but: She was caught, convicted and sentenced unlike the Harvey Girls situation. This is not a #MeToo incident.

Ithaca hired her anyway, it is the University that is questionable. Especially hiring someone who took advantage of her position to exploit the most weak.

  6. She was a Psych who used her influence to get a vulnerable patient to have sex with her. There are so many stories of people in the (so-called) mental health profession that take advantage of troubled counselees to get sex. It’s sickening.

  7. In some respects her situation is worse than Harvey Weinstein’s. She had a legal obligation to do no harm to the person whose care she was entrusted. Harvey had no such obligation; he was just interviewing people for jobs. Obviously, the magnitude of his crimes are far greater.

  8. She didn’t have “the emotional wherewithal?” WTF does that even mean? A university president? Oh brother. That is the statement of a psychotic mental patient with a PhD. Another social promotee aff action moron making $250K for not being a white male.
