Chicago: Juveniles charged with armed carjackings released in 24 hours, records show

Chicago Sun Times: Dozens of juveniles were charged last year in Chicago for allegedly pointing guns at motorists and stealing their cars, but most were not detained longer than 24 hours, according to court records obtained by the Sun-Times.

Armed carjackings have become a major political problem for Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Almost every part of the city has been plagued by the brazen holdups. There were almost 1,000 of them last year, compared with 663 in 2016.

Last week, former Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, who’s considering a run for mayor, criticized Emanuel for failing to take control of the problem. McCarthy said “criminals are getting released immediately after arrest. Many times, they’re not being prosecuted. If there’s no sanction, what the hell?”

Behind the scenes, elected officials are asking the same question.

Ald. Michele Smith (43rd), Ald. Matthew O’Shea (19th), Ald. Michael Scott Jr. (24th) and state Sen. Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago, are all taking a hard look at juvenile gun crime as their constituents fall victim to it.  read more

  1. Didn’t those stupid ass kids know guns are illegal in Chicago? Where I live if some little shit tries that they hear from the Judge right then and there…usually with a load of .410 buckshot in the face. Problem solved.

  2. FAKE news! The Democraps banned private gun ownership in 1982, and that’s when the last crime EVER happened there!

This is just part of the vast right-wing conspiracy, to make Democraps LOOK bad… 🙄

  3. I hate trying to inject a little common sense into this thread, but if Chicago’s going to stay on track for increasing its gun violence statistics every year, these kids need to get out jail fast and get back to work.

  4. Let’s see…the city is being plagued with an epidemic of armed car-jackings, while at the same time, car jackers are being released right after they are arrested. Nope, don’t see any connection. This is a tough puzzle. Where is Columbo when we need him?
