Florida Man: GOP Rep Rooney- ” I’ll Do Something on Gun Control, But ‘Not Necessarily for Normal People’”

Breitbart: On Saturday’s “MSNBC Live,” Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL) stated that “some freedoms are going to have to be given up” to ensure unstable people don’t get weapons and that he will agree to act on gun control, but “not necessarily for normal people.” He also expressed uncertainty as to whether people should be allowed to own AR-15s and argued for making schools harder targets.

Rep. Francis Rooney (R-FL)

Rooney said, “Well, we are one of the most open societies in the world. I think that each one of these heinous crimes raises the bar and makes us — compels that we, as a nation, rethink where we are on our open society versus what are we willing to do in restricting freedom to make sure that we’re safe and secure. Very unstable situation here, when someone like a person of this demonstrated mental illness, at the local level and even to the FBI, could get ahold of an assault weapon, we’ve got to think about that.”

He added, “I think this raises the bar significantly, that a person of this demonstrated debility could get ahold an assault weapon, that so many warning signs at the — at all levels of government would go unanswered, and that he could just walk right into another soft target school. We’ve got to harden up these schools. Too many schools have been plagued.”

Later, Rooney answered a question on his support for looser gun laws by stating, “I think…the question is who gets the gun, not the gun itself. I think we need to have really tough laws on background checks and making sure — and waiting periods, maybe even put chips in the guns, so we know where they are. But something — some freedoms are going to have to be given up to make sure that unstable people don’t have access to those weapons. Guns don’t kill people. The deranged people kill people, and they use guns or they use car bombs or they use different things to do it.” He further stated that privacy laws “absolutely” have to be looked at.  read more

  1. “some freedoms are going to have to be given up”

Those who sacrifice Freedom for Security deserve neither.
(or attain neither – can’t remember the quote)

    izlamo delenda est …

  2. He’d like to limit gun ownership to black powder rifles.

This jerkoff sucking up to the liberal press is nauseating, talking like he’ll decide how the second amendment will be enforced.

I don’t think any of these assholes realize we’re not looking to them for guidance on how to conduct our lives, they are suppose to manage the affairs of state not force feed moral guidelines on the public. That was done previously, it’s our constitution, they were hired as clerks so clerk and STFU.

  3. Why have we allowed these poor elected turkeys to assume that the Constitution doesn’t limit their power to pass any laws they deem necessary! The Constitution, in fact, limits their ability and authority to do so! In the case of the 2nd amendment the only power they have is to propose a constitutional amendment to change it!

  4. This guy is a very dangerous dipshit, because he has NO idea what he thinks. When it matters most, instead of defending our constitutional rights, he placates whoever is complaining loudest, for fear of losing his money and votes. No honor. Primary his ass, and make him do something for a living.

  5. We have plenty of laws regarding the purchase of weapons by mentally disturbed individuals. http://www.ncsl.org/research/civil-and-criminal-justice/possession-of-a-firearm-by-the-mentally-ill.aspx
The laws are simply not being enforced. This Florida puke had enough red flags flying he could have been a Chinese military parade. Expelled five times, not allowed to attend school with a backpack, 37 recent police calls to his residence, history of abuse to his mother and still a report to the FBI was ignored. Absolutely ridiculous. Making more unenforceable laws isn’t going to solve a damn thing.

  6. Tim-this is the quote from you were looking for.
Benjamin Franklin once said: “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”
    And Benjamin Franklin was right!

  7. By the same illogic, we should curtail the First Amendment freedom of the press for fake news and fomenting violence by the fascist Antifa. We should also limit a citizens free speech in case they say something that causes a true believer to shoot up a softball practice. Lets not forget about putting limits on that “religion of peace” since so many are being killed under the age old “God said so” sharia excuse. And surely we can agree that the Trump rallies were a danger to the PTB, so the right to assembly should be limited too. And if you think you should be able to petition the government about your grievances, that kind of thinking is dangerous and needs to be curtailed.

  8. What a massive DERP this guy is. “put chips in guns”. Bloody hell. How about we put chips in politicians? We need to know where they are at all times, and what they’re doing, given their dangerous propensity for derpiness.

  9. Some laws need to be given up before we actually even try fully identify what the issue even is? Who is to say that a shooter that can’t get a gun doesn’t go rent a U-Haul or build a bomb with a pressure cooker. They could show up and throw acid on people. Or any myriad of things. Accepting the liberal premise that we need to get rid of our freedoms (guns) and blame a type of gun is as effective at solving the problem as doing nothing. Just do nothing and empower the schools and local police to come up with solutions. Congress is going to solve this as well as they did health care. No one wins, everyone gets screwed and the issue gets worse.

  10. “Assault weapon” was a term created by the Brady Campaign to conflate NFA weapons and superficially similar semi auto civilian weapons. You can be assured that anyone using this term is a moron and/or a marxist assclown. Regardless of the reason, anyone using this term is not to be trusted.

  11. I used to walk 2.4 miles twice per day between the transit station and my place of employment, just because I liked the walk.

One morning I am walking on a path that borders a BOEING Co parking lot at what was their pilot training facility. Bldg 25-20 if you want to look it up on Google Earth.

So this is in 2003, a couple years after the 9-11 attack on the World Trade Center and I look over and see a cooler left in the parking lot between two vehicles. There is no one anywhere near it and I did not have a cellular phone back then so I went into the building and notified Security that I needed to use a phone to call 911 and Department of Homeland Security.

So the Homeland Security individual who shows up tells me to put my hands up and turn around against the wall. All the while here is a cooler that no one knows what is in it is sitting in the parking lot and there it sits for fifteen or twenty minutes that this idiot is telling me that I could be under arrest and charged with trespassing.

Local law enforcement shows up and ask her: Have you looked into whether or not the cooler poses any threat? What have you done so far to assess the threat? Are you fucking stupid or what is your problem?

Anyone want to ask me my opinion on what the value of contacting federal law enforcement agencies regarding a threat is? Actually you don’t need to ask, I will volunteer that they have a massive presence here in the Puget Sound Region, they drive around all day, every day, in black Suburbans with blacked out windows, and I am skeptical of the value of any of the money we spend on them.

In the case of the one instance I have of having had personal experience with what they do: “They” were worse than useless. The cooler happened to have been left there accidently, but until the guys that left it showed up 45 minutes after I contacted Homeland Security no one had a clue whether it was a threat or not.

  12. Admit it: You will be safer if assault rifles are in possession of only State or Federal authorities. They swear they will do their best to get on scene of any shootings just as soon as they can.

  13. Well he is also now on my list along with Nelson who is not getting my vote. As the Mule said ENFORCE THE LAW ON THE BOOKS ! Quit babying these idiots with light sentences or no sentences at all and early releases!
