A State of Drunkenness – IOTW Report

A State of Drunkenness

USA Today recently compiled a list of the top 20 cities whose residents put away the most alcohol. As we approach Memorial Day and folks are wondering where might be a good place to party, Wisconsin features prominently on the list. Besides having half of the places named, the state takes 1st (Green Bay), 2nd (Eau Claire), 3rd (Appleton) and 4th (Madison) for cities that drink to excess. Watch

  1. Visit New Glarus and Minhas if you are ever in south central Wisconsin. Too great of an experience to pass up.

New Glarus is freaking HUGE, it’s like a country club complete with self tours, ruins beer garden, and of course a gift shop. They export none of their beer out of state, so it’s a Wisconsin treat.

Minhas is the world’s fifth largest craft brewer. The town is literally built around the brewery. Huge and very historic with countless flavors; plus for $12 you can sample (about 4 oz each) from about 100 beers on tap and in the bottle for 20 minutes and they send you out the door with a 5 pack mix of craft soda and beer and a free Minhas beer glass. Literally they would open up a top shelf $10 beer, poor you a few ounces and toss the rest if no one else wanted it. I got drunk in 20 short minutes. I tried to sample all 100, but came up about 85% short.

    CHEERS!!!

  2. There is much German, Dutch, Polish and Scandinavian heritage there. I believe Wisconsin has the highest per capital density of taverns. Winters are long there and well the Packers are awesome. Also WI has great local cheeses and sausages and bratwurst and kraut.

  4. I went to Walmart on Sunday afternoon on my bicycle,
bought a few bottles of Miller Lite and put em in the bicycle basket.

As I was about to leave, I thought to myself that if I fell off the bicycle, the bottles would break.

So I drank all the beer before I cycled home.

It turned out to be a very good decision, because I fell off my bicycle seven times on the way home.

  5. A friend’s brother-in-law from Sheboygan was stopped by a family friend cop on the way home from an underage binge with his buddies. He definitely was deep in the bag. When stopped he rolled down his window and waited. The cop came up and asked, “Stan, you drinkin’?” Stan replied, “I don’t know. You buyin’?” Stan got a ride home…

    Only 1 beer garden?

sounds to me like a “hole in the wall” town.

Not that I drink beer; but there over 12 beer gardens within an hour.

OK I do drink beer! Happy now?

    PS

the city Disneyland is in was founded by Duetch immigrants about 150 years ago. We have lots of Huns around here. some are my good friends and they clue me in to the “best” beer gardens!

  7. GREEN BAY
    MAGA
    YES
I would of been upset if we were not named #1.

There is a history of drinking here. During prohibition, many of the black market booze/beer destined for Chicago was brewed and consumed in Green Bay. It became common place to have speak easy’s all over town. It was accepted by the law enforcement as well. The old pubs are gone now but the heritage remains. This is a drinking town with a football addiction.

EauClaire and Madison are college towns and Appleton is south of Green Bay, on the route to Chicago. Many of the original settlers of this region came from Europeans who brewed Rum and beer. They brought that heritage with them to America.

We are not drunks, we are professionals.
    The rest is history

BTW, I can drink the best under the table.

  8. Does’nt being slowed by the Snow have something to do with the numbers ?
People in warmer areas drink a lot, but I think when you can do other things
(get out) you do them without drinking as much, because you have to get home somehow.

  9. Plantsman,
We drink year round. The snow simply keeps the beer cold.
There are plenty of warm bars in Green Bay. Getting home is never a problem.
