Cum Again? – IOTW Report

Cum Again?

A supermarket chain refused to decorate a congratulatory cake for a high school graduate because they deemed it obscene.

Publix (a company whose name sounds obscene) censored the latin Summa Cum Laude when a mother ordered the cake for her son, who received the highest honors from a Christian-based homeschooling class.

When they picked up the cake it looked like this-

HT/ annie

Question: If Publix doesn’t know the term Summa Cum Laude, how do they know Summa and Laude aren’t just as obscene?

You think Publix will make a cake with Pūblix written on it?

  1. Be kind, they are good.
    Sounds like a software glitch
Not a 17 year old baker attention maker
Publix is all right in my book
I will glady Come Again as a customer

  2. A good friend of mine is the bakery manager at a nearby Publix. He’ll (a) know what to do about educating the workers so this doesn’t happen again, (b) feel quite bad about how a customer was treated, and (c) get a big laugh about it.

  3. @A Customer – 100% agreed! Publix rarely screws up and they go way out of their way to correct any mistakes they might make. I’m a very satisfied customer, too.

Some people complain about their prices being a bit high, but if you use their weekly sales flyer and wander by the BOGO tables, they end up being as inexpensive as anybody, including (yecch) Walmart.

  4. Screw Publix. For a month they will harass you at the checkout line, begging for donations for the March of Dimes in front of other customers.
The March of Dems then funnels a lot of that money to Planned Parenthood.

I say loudly so people could hear, I DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD.

  5. Fur, Have you tried Cuban Bread? (with or without a Cafe con Leche)
Pity you have such a lousy store there; the Publix-es here are the best-run and best priced (other than Aldi and the small produce markets).

  6. Noooo this wasn’t computer error, just an uneducated person who spends time with their mouth open watching TV for hours on end when they’re not at work.
I split time west coast/ east coast because of family and of all the grocery chains I’ve been to, Publix is just ‘OK’. If they’re all that’s around, well, you’re screwed. If you like them, congrats. And I agree about the nagging for money. I’ve only noticed the pushiness at Publix. I think they’re very classless in that regard. They don’t consider just putting up a sign or a tip jar and they actually get testy or whiny when you pass. “Ohhh you don’t want to help the XXXX with just a dollaaaaarrrr?” or “But it’s for a great cause… are you suuuuure?”
Yeah, lemme give some charity I’ve never heard of my last bit of money instead of buying this cough syrup for my kid. Shut up and ring!

  7. I hate being confronted with their pressure at the checkout. Would you like to round off that amount for bla bla bla? No I research the charities I give to.

  8. Do not get me started on the grocery store naggers.
OK look here. For some time now, grocery stores here in Las Vegas do not do the nagging for dollars shit anymore because the chains would end up pitting the cashiers against each other for prizes. And some of them felt pressured to nag by the manager. Some cashiers were just fucking rude or tried to guilt you. (guilt don’t work on this girl. Nice try, though). So customers started to complain and you’d hear comments like- when is this fucking promotion over? I’ll come back then. LMAO. Well, you can do that as a customer when you have about 10 different grocery stores in your town and the chains figured that out. Solution was putting up a gigantic billboard with colorful paper and shapes or whatever according to the season. ie: St.Patrick’s day had shit tons of green shamrocks with people’s names on them for whatever charity it was. St. Rose hospital was a big one for kid’s cancer and stuff. People get into that. And they volunteer their money. What? Volunteer to give up money without nagging them??? Why YES! LOOK!

But if your town has just a Pubix or a Walmart, you’re stuck with people nagging you. Tell them NO. And if they get snippy, beat em down with that can of stewed tomatoes. lol

Now on to the other bidness.
1.The bakery worker was a dirty minded dumb ass. Case closed.
    2. Grocery stores can have good Italian and French baguettes.
I get mine at Albertsons, Smiths or Sprouts and this little French bakery up the street from me. Also, certain Italian restaurants will sell you theirs fresh made if you ask them.

Maybe Pubix should offer grammar and spelling tests for their employees.

  9. LOLOL Anniegirl—

“ABC News 4 reached out to Publix to find out why the website confuses this honor with a profanity. But corporate officials didn’t respond to our question.”

Because they’re calling Starbucks for some advice. lolz

  10. First, nothing against Publix, but go to a decent bakery if it’s important. Their frosting tastes like sugared lard.

Second… having home schooled my own kids, I don’t understand how someone graduates “with (any kind of) honors”… from… “a” class?

  11. I worked at a small run down bakery in the early 90’s. The low-sugared desserts were lard + sweetnlow.lol.
I didn’t understand how they had customers! Everything tasted like it was missing an ingredient.

    In “good fun”.

If you believer my last you may think the most liberal President in history was, “A Compassionate Conservative”.
    Get it?

  13. BFH re: your comment about crusty bread (5/22 3:56 p.m.) You’re absolutely correct! I still remember the bread and rolls we took aboard our ship (U.S.S. Shangri-La CVA38)in Naples Italy. I still have mouth watering memories of that encounter in July 1962! Manga Bellisimo!

  14. Fur — Tell me you’re not one of those NYC expats who move to Florida then all the time whine about how great it was in New York. Remember, I-95 goes both ways.

    1
  15. Boobie the Rocket Dog- Why? Because he said he hasn’t been to any good bakeries near him in Florida? He didn’t say anything about NY in this thread, and he complains about NY politics, politicians and taxes all the time.

  16. Boobie,
I JUST wrote a piece about how I came from the area in NYC that is considered to be the mecca of NYC pizza- 233rd street at White Plains Rd., and I still defend pizza around the country because it’s what you grew up used to.
So no. I’m not one of those.
Having said that, the Italian bread around here is not Italian bread. It’s a hot dog bun with sesame seeds on it. I haven’t confronted crusty bread yet. It must be the humidity.
