State of New Jersey About To Spend $5 Mil on Local Journalism

Citing a concern that smaller communities are suffering from under reporting about goings-on locally, New Jersey law makers have passed a bill that would put $5 million in state tax payer money into local news coverage.

Called the “Civic Info Bill,” the plan is to set up a nonprofit that would be supported by the state’s universities. The new organization’s board of directors would then designate the $5 million towards promoting (i.e. propping up) news outlets with a New Jersey specific focus. Law makers are holding up their legislation as a model for the rest of the nation.   More

  1. The $5 million will be paid out to several private entities, each of which is owned by a relative of the governor’s. It will disappear to offshore accounts, and no changes to the media will occur.

In 2020 the same people will insist that where $5 million was not enough, $15 million should do the trick. That money will, of course, see the same fate as the first batch.

  2. With all the restrictive laws in that sodden, fetid, and foul smelling State they would be better off funneling 5 mil into target practice for gun owners than a “profession” that has “standards”. If I remember correctly, Stormy’s “profession” has “standards” too.

  3. NJ’s Democrat governors make the Fat Man seem like a saint. You had McGreevey giving out Lewinskys at truck stops, Corzine committing securities fraud at MF Global, after crashing limos along the Garden State Parkway, and now Murphy Mini Stalin starting state run media to sell his commie agenda to the masses. Congrats New Jersey. You’ve really done it this time.
