  1. “The alleged scheme started unraveling last year when appraisers began a routine audit commissioned by the library and discovered that items were missing or damaged since the last audit in 1991.”

The last audit was done in 1991? That doesn’t sound “routine” to me.

  2. Ah, a true rare book heist. Just two weeks ago I read Geraldine Brook’s novel, People of the Book. About time too, I purchased it a couple of years ago. A fictional story wherein the central subject is a real rare book. The Sarajevo Haggadah.

It was probably made in Barcelona around 1350. It left Spain about 1492 when the pope had the Catholics hating the Jews more than the Muslims did at that time.

Anyway, in the novel the book is stolen from the museum in Sarajevo, and a fake put in its place. But I don’t think the real book was ever actually stolen from that museum. Taken in WW2 and hidden in a country side mosque by a Muslim to keep it out the hands of Nazis, yes. Damaged by a book restorer in Venice in the 1890s, yes. But never outright stolen by art thieves. Or the state tax department.

  3. To me, if there’s anything more heinous than hurting a child, it’s hurting and stealing books.

He needs to be crushed in an antique printing press, body part by body part, starting with hands and feet.
