African Swine Fever Outbreak In China

It’s a fatal disease, for pigs.

Europe has battled it in the past and is currently fighting its spread with total slaughter of any pig farm where it has shown up. Called African swine fever, the virus is of the hemorrhagic variety (think Ebola) that easily spreads and may be hosted by wild pigs and ticks.

In the last week, reports have come from China that the virus has made its way there. This is bad because China has half of the world’s pigs. Here

  1. @rickn8or: If it’s as bad as it would appear, you aren’t going to find any Smithfield products to boycott…..they’ll all be shipped overseas to the Chicoms–that’s why they bought Smithfield in the first place–they can’t feed their people with domestic production alone.
