Alex Trebek Doesn’t Shut Up as Moderator of Gubernatorial Debate

Newser-

Alex Trebek is apologizing after his much-panned gig moderating the Pennsylvania gubernatorial debate Monday night. The Jeopardy host, who was accused of talking way too much and was actually booed during the debate, issued a three-paragraph mea culpa Wednesday explaining that he “misunderstood” his role, the Philadelphia Inquirerreports. “I thought that as moderator, I was to provide a certain light-hearted approach while still being able to challenge the candidates on their record or positions,” the 78-year-old said, noting that he “failed to recognize the seriousness of the event for the voters.” “I didn’t realize I was to ask a simple question and then let the gentlemen go at each other,”

“I’m like a dog or a cat in a Library,” admitted the Canadian Trebek.

Yes, and referees and umpires are there to make decisions when needed and let the teams do the actually playing. Kinda simple Alex.

  3. I kind of feel for the guy. Being a moderator in a political debate especially for a high office really takes a bit of practice and training to do it right. I don’t think he got either and was recruited to the role by people thinking (rightly) that he would attract a lot more viewers then this event normally would.
It probably would have worked out well if the organizers had taken the time to teach and prep him better.

  4. Not surprised. Ever watch a recent episode of Jeopardy ? They rarely finish the boards. Trebek seems to ramble sometimes after the contestant gives their reply… symptom of being old, maybe. Now if there happens to be one of those annoying video categories.. forget about it. If they devoted an entire category to say, some Liberal museum in DC… after they finish that category Trebek goes on and on about the facility and the hosts…blah blah blah… kinda like me now.

  5. Trebek is as progressive from way back. It’s hard for him to hide that during his show. Every once and awhile it slips out if you’re listening. His reputation indicates he’s extremely intelligent, however he merely reads answers off cards during his show and corrects contestants when they are wrong as if he was knowledgable on the subject. And being a progressive, that explains the density of how to conduct a simple debate. Regardless, I’ve been a fan of Jeopardy for many years. It’s good excercise.
