McCorvey was, at the end of her life, an anti-abortion advocate. Her life is rather sketchy; she had multiple marriages, drug addiction, was an alcoholic and was a lesbian; she made up the story about gang rape only because she didn’t want a third child. Then McCorvey found Christianity and switched from a pro-abortion advocate to a right to life advocate.
McCorvey’s life seems like an apt metaphor for the whole abortion argument. As Jane Roe, a primary reason for the lawsuit against Wade was to legalize abortion because rape and incest victims have the right to abort, but that was a lie just like the claims early proponents made that abortion was not just a form of birth control. McCorvey’s decision to have an abortion was made by a messed up young woman with no solid moral grounding, just as many abortions today are made by messed up young women with no solid moral grounding. When McCorvey turned her life around, she apparently realized the snowball she created and sent on its way to hell.
Religion notwithstanding, and religion is important, lack of respect for life is never good for a society. And that is the framework we started with Roe v. Wade.
