  4. I saw something like that near a Home Depot store once. But more like one long curved line of white. It went on for about a half mile and ended in a huge big irregular blob. Just before a traffic light!

  7. Interesting that the opposing traffic followed the same routine. So I doubt someone failed on these markings.

    If I had to guess. Downhill vehicles, possibly traveling faster, get the inside lane around turns. Uphill vehicles get the outside lane, because they travel slower. The multiple arrows designate the lane switch point and also identify the sharpness of the curve. The odd arrows through the turn, pointing left while turning right, may designate the road pitch or grade angle.

    Whatever the case, it seems to be a lot of information.

  15. I’ve never quite gotten the “watch for rock slides” signs.

    Are you supposed to take your eyes off of the road and watch the hills for tumbling boulders with your foot hovering over the brake pedal?

    If a slide of 20 ton rocks and debris is ahead I think you should be savvy enough to stop.

    And if a sudden avalanche of earth and massive boulders lets go overhead
    and mashes you and you vehicle being aware of the danger doesn’t really help.

    I think it’s a liability release issue for state highway departments to say “don’t look at us-we warned you”

  16. Oh, that’s a no-brainer if you’ve ever been to Valsetz, Oregon back in the sixties. Loaded log trucks had the right of way on treacherous gravel roads and chose to take the inside of the turn in the road because it was safer for them. Yanno, you wouldn’t want to drive your log truck off a cliff and die. Not to mention losing a valuable load of logs. They went back to the standard way of doing it, but when my Dad ran the mill at Valsetz and was the Timber Manager of Boise Cascade, NW Oregon, he got in a head-on with a log truck because one of the old truck drivers wasn’t paying attention. Fortunately, nobody got hurt.

  19. @Sarthruk: I have a friend who was coming back from Oregon. They were in an RV towing a Jeep Cherokee. They were heading south on Hwy 99 near Red Bluff, CA, when 2 cars stopped in front of them so a utility truck could meet up with his fellow employees working on power lines. A logging truck behind my friend didn’t stop and plowed into the back of them. Totaled their jeep and damage to their RV. The guy driving the logging truck wasn’t insured, and the only thing he said to my friend was “I’m sure glad my load didn’t shift and plow throw the back of my window!” WTF! I’m sure he lost his license over that ordeal.

  21. I saw that when I was in the UK last month. I had to see it a couple of times before I figured it out. It is at the end of where passing is allowed to tell people they need to get back into their own lane.
