Discussion About Race on the Mike Douglas Show (1974)

Wayne Hays, the democrat Ohio congressman, joins the panel that includes Muhammad Ali and Sly Stone.

Hays, 2 years later, would be embroiled in a sex scandal with the “secretary who couldn’t type,” Elizabeth Ray.

Ali is at the peak of his militant Nation of Islam, black leftism, sounding a lot like an MSNBC anchor. Sly Stone is high AF and waffles between agreeing and disagreeing with Ali, depending on what part of his brain is currently being medicated. At one point he tells Ali to get his hand out of his face.

The set gets very tense, but what really is interesting is how combative the democrat is to Ali’s militance. Today, the dems just want the black vote. They yes blacks to death.

Interesting time capsule.

(BTW, I love Sly and the Family Stone. That’s how I found this clip.)

  1. That was pretty darn interesting. I bet Mike Douglas was trying to figure out how to get to a commercial break as fast as he could. As a boxing fan I was a big time fan of Ali. As a muzzie he lost me as a fan. You know, after 9-11 he could have made a statement or two that might have made a difference, I don’t know what it would have been, but he was silent.

  2. This is painful to watch. Pops and I watched boxing more than any other sport. When I was really young, Jerry Quarry’s gym was like a mile away. The great white dope. That’s not a real fair statement considering the class he was in. Anyway we stopped in a couple times and watched him train. My father was a want to be racist. I have some funny stories about that. He hated Ali. And he hated Ali because he was a Muslim. I really didn’t get that connection until recently. This clip show Cautious Clay bullying several people. Because he’s a dangerous man. Kind of chicken shit. Pops and I got to watch Tyson’s Unification quest together on HBO. My fathers favorite fighter of all time was Mike Tyson. Because Mike Tyson don’t give a shit.
Personally I’m in total amazement at Ali’s boxing abilities. The guy was second to none at boxing. But sometimes it turns into a fight.

  3. Ali was an incredible boxer. The Rumble in the Jungle and the Thrilla in Manila, are two of my most memorable sporting events. They were awesome. That was boxing at its best.

  4. Each to his own, of course.

I liked Ali as a fighter…but never once did I hear him say anything bad about the murdering, thieving, raping, goat banging religion of ‘peace’ he espoused.

  5. Damn, I had forgotten how prejudiced and angry Muhammed Ali really was.

P.S. – I had also forgotten about the about the Wayne Hays/Elizabeth Ray scandal. At the time, National Lampoon magazine had the funniest comment on that subject, hands down: “Ask not what your cunt Ray can do for you…”
