A quick refresher course to remind us of previous global warming/cooling scares

American Thinker: In light of the new, much-hyped “official” report on global warming that is being pushed by almost all the media and the record cold that is occurring now in many parts of the U.S., it would be helpful if some enterprising journalist actually reported how often the people have been scared by previous warnings of global warming or cooling.

An article in Wattsupwiththat.com from 2014 encapsulates the multiple intentional scares from 1895 on. Throughout the entire 120 year period fossil fuel use was growing exponentially, population growth was exploding, and CO2 concentration was increasing. The fact that temperatures both rose and fell during this period shows that there is no correlation between temperature, fossil fuels, CO2 and the human population. Storm activity, floods, droughts, and sea levels have also fluctuated throughout billions of years.

There are a huge number of bullet points in this article. I have left in some to highlight the difference in scare tactics at various points in time by the media who seem to just repeat whatever they are told and don’t care how far off previous predictions have been:

A brief history of climate panic and crisis… both warming and cooling

For at least  120 years, climate “scientists” have been claiming that the climate was going to kill us…but they have kept switching whether it was a coming ice age, or global warming.

(A timeline of claims follows, updated to 2014)

  • 1895 – Geologists Think the World May Be Frozen Up Again – New York Times, February 1895
  • 1902 – “Disappearing Glaciers…deteriorating slowly, with a persistency that means their final annihilation…scientific fact…surely disappearing.” – Los Angeles Times
  • 1912 – Prof. Schmidt Warns Us of an Encroaching Ice Age – New York Times, October 1912
  • 1923 – “Scientist says Arctic ice will wipe out Canada” – Professor Gregory of Yale University, American representative to the Pan-Pacific Science Congress, – Chicago Tribune

  1. I have to go get a ton of coal today in the slosh – I want global warming back, just till I’m officially in the ground. After that you can have anything that’s in your budget to deal with.

  2. I can’t help but notice that every time someone proclamation that “we must DO SOMETHING”, the “something” we must do is never sit back and enjoy life in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

  3. They say Greenland’s ice is gone and it’s a temperate rain forest now. I think I’ll retire there because out here in the NW, it’s pushing 90F with blistering sun, endless drought, howling dry winds. The crops and livestock are dead and people are both starving and burning up. The oils on my paintings are slowly dripping down their canvases. If we don’t do something, we’re all gonna die! Wait… I hear music. (Cue the Twilight Zone theme.)

  4. There is no evidence in the geological record so far that points to biological problems related to the planet being too hot. There is overwhelming evidence that it has been too cold over thousands of years at a time that negatively impacted life. The left should adjust its bullshit accordingly, i.e., global socialism is the only hope to warm the planet.

  5. Contractors were grading a hillside for development a few years ago, and my kids and I found fossilized shark’s teeth there at an elevation of more than 1200 feet above sea level. Therefore, the inescapable conclusion is that Sharknados have existed for millions of years, and Sharknado IV was actually a documentary.

This is a bigger threat to humanity than global warming. Send me lots of money.
