Why Britain Doesn’t Want Trump to Declassify Obamagate Docs

American Spectator:

“FISA declassification will assure all the actors who tried to harm America are finally exposed,” George Papadopoulos wrote on Twitter last week. “Alexander Downer, the Australian government, UK, and GCHQ (British intelligence). If FISA is not declassified, these foreign governments will try to interfere again in 2020 to hurt Trump and the movement.”

Meanwhile, the British spies who tripped up Papadopoulos, Carter Page, Michael Flynn, and others are demanding that Trump stop the release of any Obamagate docs. “UK spy chiefs in fight to stop Trump exposing their sources,” ran the headline on a Sydney Morning Herald story last week.

“MI6 chiefs are secretly battling Donald Trump to stop him publishing classified information linked to the Russian election meddling investigation,” according to the story. “The UK is warning he will undermine intelligence gathering if he releases pages of an FBI application to wiretap one of his former campaign advisers.”

“British spy chiefs have ‘genuine concern’ about sources being exposed if classified parts of the wiretap request are made public, according to figures familiar with the discussions,” continued the story. “‘It boils down to the exposure of people,’ said one US intelligence official, adding: ‘We don’t want to reveal sources and methods.’”

Fortune headlined its story, “Spy Games: Britain’s MI6 Horrified at Trump’s Plan to Declassify Details of FBI’s Carter Page Wiretap.” A lot of heavy weather is made about the threat declassification poses to “precedent.” But what do they mean by precedent? The precedent of a foreign government serving as an opposition research arm of the Democratic Party during a presidential election? more

  1. I’m inclined to believe declass is but a dream.

SD can hypothesize Trump’s “plan” or “reasoning” for not declassing, but I’m not convinced he’s on the right track, for this reason:
There was a little noticed hearing today, House Oversight Committee on Federal Prison Management. I tuned in for one reason….IG Michael Horowitz was one of only two witnesses. I figured someone on the R side would at least get a q or two in re: IG’s next report.
Jim Jordan was the only one who focused on this and his entire line of questioning held to that topic. I can’t recall every q, and will paraphrase IG’s answers.

    Q. When will the report be released?
    A. Probably not before mid summer 2019. IG still interviewing.
    Q. Has IG communicated with Huber, and how many times.
    A. Yes. A few.
    Q. Has IG spoken to Trump re: declassifying?
    A. Yes, probably, but doesn’t want to divulge any convo’s w/POTUS.

Bottom line, it doesn’t sound promising. Jordan strongly suggested that Trump backed off declass until he could clear it with IG. IG essentially was wishy washy on urgency and stated, “the focus of his work and the dedicated men/women in his dept were meticulously performing their work with the utmost integrity”.

Gut punch. Jordan pretty much had the same reaction.

  2. Maybe after tonight he will have a more urgent perspective on releasing the report. I’m getting plenty pissed off waiting for the sun, the moon, the planets, and the astrological signs to line up just right. This war is not going to be won by waiting for the other guy to fall asleep.

  3. The big question is the importance of Trump’s leverage over the exposure of all the criminal activity. He can get a lot done with the leverage but allowing the criminals to remain only means they’ll continue doing what they’re doing. At some point they have to be dealt with and I think the sooner the better. Trump is bleeding support because of this and I don’t like the trade off.
If he puts the rats in prison then he’ll have a much more compliant government to work with and in my view it’ll be better in the long term. I wish he’d reconsider.
