DC: At least three progressive Democrats have broken with their party to criticize President Donald Trump for his Wednesday decision to oppose Venezuela’s socialist dictator Nicolas Maduro.
Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and Ro Khanna of California excoriated Trump when he became one of several world leaders to recognize Venezuelan National Assembly President Juan Guaido as the country’s leader instead of Maduro.
The people of Venezuela have faced extreme economic hardship and crackdowns on their freedom under Maduro, who succeeded infamous socialist dictator Hugo Chavez. The Trump administration announced sanctions against Maduro Monday.
Omar is on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Gabbard has announced a 2020 Democratic presidential run.

It’s their country, it’s their problem, they need to be the ones to solve it.
We have nothing to gain and a good deal to lose by involving ourselves there and imposing our solution instead of letting them find their own.

Under the circumstances of a Venezuelan election more rigged than a Californian Congressional race, recognizing Guaido as President is appropriate. However, I hesitate at sanctions because evil bastards like Maduro (and Un, Castro, etc.) don’t suffer under sanctions. The risk of imposing sanctions is that the U.S. casts itself as an enemy and gives Maduro a common foe to convince his people to not revolt. I think that perversely, sanctions enable dictators like Maduro to hang on longer by claiming that their national problems are caused by the U.S. and not by their own destructive policies.
Venezuela has collapsed all by itself. By recognizing Guaido as President, we are supporting a solution, but by imposing sanctions we are providing an excuse.
