The “Super Jump” – IOTW Report

The “Super Jump”

In the early 1970’s Kenny Powers, a Canadian daredevil, attempted one of the most idiotic stunts known to humankind. Powers tried to drive a rocket-powered and winged Lincoln Continental off a massive ramp and over the mile-wide St. Lawrence River and the border between Canada and New York state.

  1. I can understand ONE person not getting it that an object not designed for flight would need some sort of aerodynamic attitude control to keep it pointed the right way while hurtling through the air at high speed.

But it is simply not conceivable that EVERYBODY on the project was that ignorant. So I figure they all wanted him dead.

  2. Well that was just stupid. Cars of that era were as aerodynamic as my garage. Plus it should have been obvious that hoodpins would be required. On a side note, that thing certainly would have cleared the wall.😉

  3. Was it attempted four previous times or was it canceled four previous times? If it was attempted then it wasn’t canceled. If it was canceled then it wasn”t attempted. Perhaps he should have said “scheduled” and “canceled.”

  4. Go to your favorite on-line map and paste in these coordinates:
    44.868916, -75.220352
Go to satelite view and you can still see remnants of the road leading up to the pile of dirt. The pond is still next to the road. I guess the pile of dirt was pushed into the river to make some of those nice, riverside lots…

Yep. So they could console his sweet young cute widow in ways that he would not agree.

  6. Diggy, you know I love you like Jerry lee Lewis loves his cousins, but…

LOOK AT THAT ACCELERATION!!!! C’mon. I’d let you sit right beside me and push that rocket “go” button. “AAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!….. and then we’d laugh as the car exploded around us and we’d drift gently back to earth.

Plus, it’s painted “F” you yellow. What’s not to like?

  7. I cannot possibly think of another earthly object LESS aerodynamic than a 1970s Lincoln Continental. Perhaps, Whoopie Goldberg. Do you think we can convince her to give it a shot?

  8. OMG!!!!! Irony just dared me to strap a rocket onto something less aerodynamic than a Lincoln and jump a river with it.

Your pick I-Man. Bus? Ford pickup? Brick? I’m in if Diggy sits beside me.

Kenny died in 2009; she might still be available.

  10. This type of self-aggrandizing, self-adulation is beyond ‘give-a-damn’ by any self-respecting, educated individual.

If you are so stupid as to test the dynamics of the simple law of physics…..have at it.
