1954 Sales Psychology Film Guides Businesses On “How To Sell To the Negro”

This primer was created so capitalists could take advantage of an overlooked emerging market; the black consumer.

It would be easy to dismiss this film as cringeworthy because of the constant use of the phrase “the negro.”

The patter is definitely of its time. There are many stereotypes thrown around, and it seems excessively patronizing and demeaning even when it’s supposed to be well-meaning and complimentary. When they get to the part where they assure the salespeople that “they are just like us,” it becomes a bit too much to take.

But I’m posting this for a different reason. In the film they cite a lot of statistics, and if they are accurate, one has to wonder, “who sabotaged the emerging market”?

This is as a strong a case that Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” program is the culprit.

It sounds like he came up with a government solution to a problem that capitalism was well on its way to solving. When the left-wing government stepped in to take care of the “crisis,” the one that didn’t seem to exist, everything turned to $hit.

  1. “It’s a well-known fact that the Negro is influenced by the opinions of others.” Really, you moron? And did you think this wasn’t true of the rest of the population? Yep, Fur, you’re right about how irksome that “they are just like us” thing is.

Thing is, I have a hard time believing this didn’t evoke a “Really, Sherlock?” response out of people back in the day, too.

  2. I had to read it twice because I saw, “selling the negro” lol.
How many times were they going to say, “the negro”? OCD much!?

The chamber of commerce is what screwed blacks and women out of jobs by bringing in illegals. So I’ll trust them as much as I trust the AMA, who said 0bamacare was the bees knees.

  3. Wow…

    Racist, patronizing, and incredibly insulting…

But BFH, yes, these also do make a great point. What would have happened had we gone through the social changes of the 60s, MLK and civil rights without Johnson’s plan to “have those — voting Democratic for 200 years”…

“The story of a big new market”…
“One out of every three families living in cities own their own home”…
    “Negroes meet their debt obligations”…
“Tremendous buying power of this group”…
“Since 1939 income has increased more than average American”…
“Many billions of dollars to spend”…
“Profitable, above-average income group of consumers”…
    “Children are better educated too”…

  5. If only Mr Peabody’s Wayback machine really existed… I’d grab a computer loaded with You Tube clips of McDonalds, Popeye’s, Waffle house clips and show ’em whut they are about to turn into in the next 60 years or so…

  6. I’m so old I remember Robert Trout on live TV. I also remember reading in Ebony Mag the the bagpipes were invented in Africa. But I never saw that video. It must have played only in the South West.
And as Eldridge Cleaver (Soul on Ice) would say: There were no hang-lip, coconut head, purple black mo**er f**kers in it, just light skinned. handsome, clean cut, well mannered, Negros. Just what Harry Reid and Joe Biden ordered. And LBJ thought them to buy what they want and beg for what they need. Gimmeafukinbreak!

  7. Socialism (nihilistic totalitarianism under the guise of socialism) destroys everything it touches.
That includes negro (as well as caucasoid) economic and educational gains after WWII.
Sowell touches on this. Apparently the statistics are available; it just isn’t PC to discuss it.
Thus we close our eyes to the facts and wander in the darkness of lies and deceits, for the sakes of a few. “Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.” As the Frog says. But the world only hears “ribbet, ribbet, …”

  8. Wow, despite the stereotypical language of the age in the video, what strikes me is how American black families have degraded from the ideal family model. Thanks to progressive policies implimented by Roosevelt and especially, Johnson and in a large part, Feminism.

There are barely any fathers left in black families. Fathers are so vital for successful families and society. Heartbreaking and it reflects the destructive course this country has taken. There is hope, but the reparative measures will take time and focus.

  9. Seems to me that the 3 points that are made could be said of any American, at anytime, and anywhere and that the film could have been 30 seconds long simply saying, “Just sell like you sell to anyone else, for God’s sake.”

  10. That Negress looks so well dressed and clean, too. She’s very articulate, I bet. Wears gloves, a beautiful dress, and a hat. Nice. I like.

Joe Biden would have noticed and said so on CNN.

  11. What happened? I’ll tell you what happened: The progressive left is what happened. The poisoning of the negro mind is what happened. They looked happy back then. Now they spend their time being disgruntled and holding themselves in a perpetual state of rage. Thanks Johnson!

Did you notice it was made by the Johnson publishing company?
At 1:13 – “Publishers of Ebony, Tan, Jet and Hue.”

No I hadn’t, thanks! So they’re not selling “the Negro”, they’re selling “the White Guy”! Very funny.
