  1. Retail jobs are very much needed in our economy. You need a good attitude, to show up for work and on time and do the job. People do not like the work because it is shift work and working on weekends. However, my nephew started working at Superstore here in Canada at the age of 16, in the deli department. He showed up for work, did the job, has great people skills and so was rotated through other areas of the store. At the age of 29, he is being trained up to become a store manager. He graduated with honours from high school, but could not decide on a course of studies for university. I think that is a good thing, as he is doing very well in the retail sector and has saved lots of money.

  2. Nothings wrong about working a Wal-Mart except I’d be going to Wal-Mart everyday…..I will, however, volunteer to refold jeans and T-shirts at home for 80K a year…..

  3. There’s a sign in Key West that says

“We’re closer to Cuba than Wal-mart”

    Havana..90 Miles…Homestead Wallyworld…135…I skip the Homestead

Store….Because…It’s a bit “too” interesting for Me.

  4. Same as making $50k in 1979.

    Yea, $175k today isn’t much.

Growing up in 1979 $1,000,000 meant something.

Today you’d have to have $3,500,000 to equal the same thing.

Unless of course your primary focus was 4k 80″ TVs back in 1979.

  5. The article missed a few finer points. Like how the GM’s total compensation includes the annual bonus based on the business the store does. Same with ‘associates’ – at a lower level – who work there a year or longer. Tends to encourage stability (don’t laugh, any of you who’ve been at the mercy of a team leader deficient in logic) and discourages shrinkage. Really, it’s not a bad place to work. Like anywhere else, it’s what you make of it. Of course, picking a good area to work out of is pretty important. Some are like a capitalist version of Lord of the Flies with a customer base to match. Others are like downscale department stores. Local, local, local.

I did some time in a WM when I came off the road for a bit. I viewed it as the same kind of method used to incorporate cons back into society. Overnights is a weird shift. But employee discount. The manager was surprised and thanked me for turning in my discount card when I left. Apparently that was an exception.

  6. Beachmom, there could very well be a camera watching you right now. SmartTV, Smart Phone, computer, game boy, X-box, pretendo, they are all watching. The break room, that’s just a start.
