Last week was the compensatory award by a jury to Gibson Bakery of $11 million against Oberlin College. This week the jury handed down the maximum punitive award. It seems the judge capped the award to double the compensatory, setting the upper limit at $22 million.
All together Oberlin College has been ordered by the court to pay Gibson Bakery upwards of $33 million. More
Don’t worry about Oberlin College, though. According to their 2013 financial report they have upwards of $713.9 million in their endowment alone. – Dr. Tar
Now let’s see who gets fired.
If it’s anything like the Duke “rape” case, then no one will lose their jobs.
The institution simply chalks it up to the cost of doing the business of pushing the Leftist agenda of Hate and Division and begs for more money from the suckers.
I agree with TRF.
Oberlin might go under because of this.
They are already under water because of their giving grants to most kids coming in.
Look them up, they are in deep doo doo.
I hope it happens to many more schools to put a stop to this nonsense.
Good for this family and for the rest of us. Maybe, just maybe, this will wake up the boards and administrators at colleges and universities. There really are lines their students, faculty, and staff cannot cross. It’s long past time when they should’ve been reined in.
The dean of students “has taught courses spanning the themes of gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity studies, social justice, and HIV/AIDS”. That means she can’t do math.
If Oberlin has liability coverage, I hope their insurance company is furious and ready to drop them. And if they do, the word will spread throughout the insurance industry.
Oberlin will survive. They probably are like a lot of schools that have huge endowments yet still charge $54K to the general student body. They might have to dip into that art collection and get rid of a few of their prized work.

Jimmy,
Oberlin’s carrier has stated, when the compensatory award was announced, that the school’s liability insurance does not have coverage to pay out for this suit.
I guess the Board will institute a bi-weekly bake sale, or, on the other hand, they can always pony it up from Oberlin’s $700mil endowment.
Karma is not kind to the willfully stupid!

Jimmy, the insurance company has already told them that they will not pay. Also many other insurance companies will be looking at this and say no way.
This is a big win for us, and SJW creeps just took a big hit.Now if we could make the individuals take a hit in the pocket book we might get some were.

Thanks for the update, ‘This’ and ‘Geoff.’
Yes, the insurance company said that what Oberlin did was a voluntary act and not an unintentional occurrence.
Same way that most car insurance company won’t cover you if you get in an collision while drunk driving.
I had the great pleasure of visiting there yesterday. Bought some baked goods and a few tee shirts and congratulated them on their win. One of the owners told me the local support had been overwhelming. It felt good to see the good guys finally win one and the punitive award is the cherry on the sundae.
I think Oberlin’s insurance carrier has filed an action to determine if they have a duty of coverage. But coverage would only be limited to the compensatory award; insurers are legally prohibited from covering the punitive damages.
Its nice to see that Oberlin College has ingratiated itself with the local community.
“Hey buddy? Can you spare a Ph.D. from having to get a REAL job?” 😳
When 27 Oberlin PhDs apply for 2 part time jobs at the car wash, how do they decide who to hire?
Soros and the like will pay the bill.
The idea is to use this victory across the nation, in simiilar situations.
not too smaht are they
$33 million of “other people’s money”
Looks like a lot of have made the trip to Gibson’s recently. Happy, happy day for the Gibson family.
As for Oberlin, I worked with a student group at the college 40 years ago and never mind. What a hideous experience.

They should bake a cake!
Leftist bullies has just lost an important tool. This goes beyond Oberlin.
Leftist bullies has just lost an important tool… maybe.
Score one for the good guys, but tell that to Jack Philips!

I can’t help but think that Gibsons will now become a target for relentless Leftist skullduggery out of pure retribution! Gibsons needs to be on its toes in order to guard against Leftist entrapment into a nice juicy law suit over some fabricated situation.
