Extremely intelligent sports play

I can’t help but think about a past reader named Bud who quit our site after a few verbal imbroglios, one of which was a discussion about intelligent sports strategies.

I was carping about a football player who intercepted a pass in the closing minute of a playoff game and ran it in for a touchdown. That’s the wrong play. You go out of bounds at the 1 yard line, the reason being you are not giving the ball back to the opposing team (where anything could happen – quick TD, recovered onside kick, another quick TD) and you can run out the clock.

Bud said he hated people like me, pussies that use their mind in sports rather than being mindless oafs who don’t.

He quit.

Cut to this Dodger pitcher who Bud would hate.

He INTENTIONALLY balks. That’s right, INTENTIONALLY. What benefit would that be?

Watch-

I suspect Bud would have a problem with Trump because what Jansen did was a Trump move–> seemingly stupid to the ignorant who aren’t playing on his level.

Also, getting back to Bud. There’s nothing wrong with being a fooball head. Some guys like to smash stuff. It’s straight up. It’s clean.

Some guys are bisbull heads. A little more laid back, more likely to sleep with your girlfriend.

Both sports are American. That’s the key. People may think differently, but they’s American.

    Even fuggin’ Cubs fans.

  3. Talk about strategy not approved by the manager, like watching Old Timey played baseball.

The most unique American played sport of them all. NO CLOCK.

    Thanks BFH.

Watching POTUS KICK ASS RIGHT NOW.

  4. watched this w/ the sound off (watching PDT’s rally) … & I’m thinking he didn’t want the runner stealing signs from the catcher on the next pitch

… did I win the crackerjacks?

  5. @ John James R – there is no good balk. There is an intentional balk, which is what this pitcher did, and a non-intentional balk, where the pitcher pulls his planted foot off the pitchers mound. Must be planted.

@ Molon Labe – not sure about watching the signs. I think the pitcher thought the runner was going to steal, THEN being put in a worse position with one on, two outs and being on third he said, screw it. I can do this.

Will have to look up his relief wins.

I wonder if he was talking directly to the runner though?? Only because he tapped and then almost told him ‘go on’ then the second base umpire advanced the runner.

Yep, ya gotta know baseball to know America. It’s supposed to be a tradition-rich sport. That’s why I dislike the modern uniforms. The Red Sox should change their name to the white pants because nobody can see the red socks anymore. It’s shameful and disrespectful.

  7. @glover ~ run #4 is irrelevant w/ the score 3-5, & the runner will (probably) score from either second, or third, on a hit. so his base is also irrelevant at this point w/ 2 outs.

  8. Speaking of uniforms, notice all the times that teams wear pink as part of their uniform.

Yeah, I am fully aware of breast cancer. My mother died of breast cancer. My brother’s mother-in-law died of breast cancer and I was good friends with her. At least two women I went to high school with died of breast cancer. But having all of these things to “spread awareness” just strike me as moral preening. If baseball, football, and whatever other sports wear pink are so concerned, why don’t they take donations for cancer research at their games and pledge to match whatever is raised?

Never mind that the money spent or the efforts to “raise awareness” for breast cancer are out of proportion to the efforts made to fight prostate cancer. But that is a problem for toxic males, I suppose, so why worry about it.

The whole “raise awareness” schtick has been around for decades. OK, I’m old and cranky but it is yet one more thing that pisses me off. I’m tired of being bombarded with celebrities and others all trying to raise awareness of one thing or another.

I think cancer, among lots of other health issues, needs dedicated scientists to figure out a cure a lot more than we need awareness raising.

“Awareness raising” smacks of liberalism and fruitcake chicken-gutted people pushing it.

  10. Trump has been doing this maneuver successfully for two years.

Want proof? Look no further than the destruction of credibility of the media and the mental instability of all of the entire left-wing.

You think Obama hasn’t been watched like a hawk by the Trump administration? How about Brennan,…or Comey,…or Clapper…or Hillary? He’s been letting them walk until they have Trump exactly where he wants them.

Then he wins. And then WE win.

  11. The explanation here is fairly simple, and brilliant.

if you watch the video the catcher was going to an exotic series of signs that the reliever was unsure of.
The catcher did this because they suspected the runner on second was stealing signs and relaying them to the hitter.
Up by two runs, the on base runner is of no consequence. They can’t lose unless the guy at the plate scores.
After struggling with the catcher’s signs the pitcher finally said, “fuggit, I’m gonna balk, guys,” sending the runner to third where he’d be unable to relay signs to the batter.

Now the pitcher and catcher could use simple signs. No stress. Nothing to think about. He struck out the batter for the third out.

    Brilliant. Never saw it before.
