Wow, I’ve eaten in 15 of these chain restaurants. 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,15,18,26.

I can’t believe some are still around, like, Chicken Delight, Arthur Treacher’s and Ground Round.

Some of these places are hanging on with just a half dozen or, like the Brown Derby, one location left. Read Here

  1. Seven. I can’t say I miss any of these with the possible exception of Roy Rogers. Back in the 70s when I was living in D.C., I ate at the one on Wisconsin Ave. at more-or-less Macomb St. Their roast beef sandwiches were very tasty and reasonably priced.

    edit: …and it was real roast beef. You could see them slice the meat for your sandwich off of a big hunk.

  2. Bennigans had this deep fried meat and cheese sammich that came with jelly for dipping and was covered in powdered sugar. Oh man, that sammich was sublime. (Am I old now?)

  3. Mr Hanover…I was pleasantly surprised to find a Shakey’s Pizza in

    Angeles City , Philippines in 1984 …The Beer was warm, but the Pizza

    was pretty good.

    I’d forgotten all about Dog N’ Suds..Lived in Bennigans in the

    early 90.s…

    Who remembers “Sandy’s” and “Burger Chef”?

  4. Used to go to a Dog N’ Suds as a kid. Loved their root beer. And Burger Chef was great because they had a condiment bar way back before anybody else. Order a plain burger and by the time you got your condiments and sat down you were basically eating a whopper.

    I also ate at the first Red Robin location on Farnham Avenue E in Seattle. That location is also closed now.

    That is a very old picture. The parking lot was later paved, but that hill was a lot steep than it looked. If you parked facing down hill and had to back out your car would probably have a hard time. Walking up that hill has also pretty tough.

  6. Dutch Pantry was a place I loved to stop at on family vacation when I was a little kid. All over Pennsylvania and Ohio. Now I think there is like 3 left if that.

  7. Sweden House smorgasbord restaurants and Sign of the Beefcarver. There’s a few left around me but not many. Used to be fairly abundant in my neck of the woods.

  8. It’s a regional thing, but Charlie Brown’s Steakhouse is on it’s last breath. Also Pizzaria Uno.
    I’ve been to 12 on the list and for about half of those it has been over 30 years.

    Planet Hollywood had the absolute best white chocolate ice cream.

    Different Tim, Sweden House was my dad’s favorite! We used to go to the one in Kalamazoo.

  10. I’ve only been to Quiznos and HoJo’s (in Canada).

    Willysgoat! Trader Vics. They had awesome Mai Tais.

    My oldtime favs that are gone:

    Stuart Anderson’s Black Angus: Best teriyaki steak
    Herfy’s hamburgers
    Pizza Haven — “Got a pizza craven? Go to Pizza Haven!”
    And no more Dairy Queens in Seattle. You gotta go way out of town for your Dilly Bars.

  12. My Grandma “Mocko” Used to hoard Condiments in the Glove Box of Her

    Car ( She always had to have a new car…even though She never drove,

    And We always took Her Car on Trips) We were leaving a drive thru

    Hardees (who bought out Sandy’s) and I mentioned they didn’t give Us

    any Ketchup…She opens the Glove Box and WALLAH! Sandy’s Ketchup

    Packets..( Sandy’s had been closed 10 Years by then!) I used them..

    whatever doesn’t kill You…Makes You violently ill.

    Do Roy Rogers restaurants still exist?

  14. been to 16 (that I know of) … loved HoJo … Mighty Moes & Orange Freezes! first hamburger joint I was ever in was Merrell’s on Rockville Pike back in the late ’50’s. Micky D’s came along & drove ’em out of business … remember the jingle? “only 47 cent for a 3 course meal …”
    Wired an Uncle John’s Chicken & Pancake House (wierd combo; only lasted a couple of years) on Rockville Pike back in the ’70’s.
    Loved Roy’s … you could make a whole salad at their fixin’s bar

  15. Maybe another western thingy….almost every highway exit had a “Stuckey’s”….get a hamburger and a rattlesnake lanyard, all in one stop. Fireworks sales were at least 6 months long…..

  16. Roy Rogers was owned by Marriott.
    In the mid-atlantic region there was almost one across the street from every Hardees. Then the geniouses at Hardees decided to buy Roy Rogers and then close almost every one. Once they destroyed the franchise some past store owners in MD purchased the brand and have tried to resurrect it. They are expanding slowly in MD and adjoining states. It’s still not the same Roy Rogers from when I was a kid/young adult.

  17. Willy, haven’t thought about a Stuckey’s in decades. Had a family member that always wanted Stuckey’s Pecan Logs for christmas. Started to have to take long drives to fulfill her wishes until eventually there were none near. Good candies too!

  18. Before Arby’s we used to have a Rax. I loved that place.

    Mrs. Winner’s used to be fantastic. Best chicken and biscuits. Every Sunday morning.

    Lee’s Famous Recipe had moments too.

    Where did all the Long John Silvers go?

    I miss the way Pizza Hut used to taste. Old Chicago tastes closest.

  19. Long John Silvers is still around, right down the schtreet from me in fact. They typically pair up with KFC around here, 2 eateries in one. They have definitely downsized.

    LOVED Dog n Suds. Best Root Beer ever!! Frosty glass… drive in service to your car. It was a treat for us kids.
    My mom loved the Ground Round… I hated that place. It was dark and weird… plus the peanut shells on the floor gave me the willys. Hamburgers were always dried out and tasteless. I loved the Hamburger Hamlet which is not mentioned. Not sure if that was a chain, but always loved their burgers.

  21. Man, I forgot about Sambo’s …They even had the Caricatures

    on the Menu and of course…The Butter made from Tigers…The

    Sambo’s in Springfield, Illinois. Shared a Parking lot with Kroger

    Save-On….One Night, after alleged under aged drinking…We grabbed a

    Shopping Cart, and hand held it out of the window of a 73 Nova going

    about 30 Miles an Hour and launched that sucker up the ramp, and into

    the Fire Door that led to the Kitchen…The Cart basically exploded

    into abstract Art…Everybody in that Kitchen shat themselves…

    I hope the Statutes have run out on that one…

  22. I’ve been to 11 of the bunch. The Ground Round used to be just up the street from us peanut shells and all. We enjoyed it! On the other hand Arthur’s Creatures wuz the worst…. that wuz some kind of mystery fish!

  23. I worked for the corporation that owned “Toddle House” and “Steak-n-Egg Kitchen”

    That company went under, don’t know what happened to the restaurants.

  24. Last Uncle John’s is in Toledo. Right up the road from me. Does well as a local “thing”. Know the owner Sal. He’s a good guy.

    There are 3 Kewpee’s still in Lima OH. My mom wanted to go there once on Mother’s day. Ok Mom, it’s your day. She doesn’t eat junk food, but it’s considered a treat. Only don’t order the small drink. It’s a dixie cup.

  25. Who from SoCal remembers Orange Julius? They were all over the place back in the 1960’s. The last one I saw at Huntington Beach Mall lasted into the 1990’s.

    One of their menu items was OJ with a raw egg. Never mind the health issues with eating a raw egg, who the hell would want to drink an OJ with a lot of egg snot floating in it? Not me.

    I lived 2 miles from Farrell’s in Whittier California when I was much younger, the giant banana split would feed like a party of six.
    Ended up working on Mr Farrell house/unit a couple years ago. He was retired at a Vancouver Washington condo project and I was doing new Windows.

  27. I remember birthdays at Farrell’s and also Orange Julius at Tacoma Mall. Many birthdays at Farrell’s or Shakeys. Our Spaghetti Factory is just fine. Shakey’s is in Renton and is good under the new owner.

    Ah, Shakey’s in Wenatchee when I was about 17 and half way across the State with a couple buddies and we were full of beer and in walks my buddy’s dad who just happened to be in central WA buying a load of hay and stopped in to see how the shooting was going. He was driving by after buying gas for the truck and out of the corner of his eye saw our vehicle parked out front and he was not one damn bit amused.

    He had to spend three hours delivering a half dozen drunk high school girls home to their parents and hauling us back to our tent and taking our guns away in Palisades before sleeping in his truck so we could not escape.

  28. I ate hamburgers + Fried chicken IN APLASTIC BASKET at Ho Jo’s in North Va. 70 yeas ago. they were trying to compete with the original Col – chain called “Chicken in a Basket”; which made good chicken – but the Col’s “secret’ made his better – about 10 years later.

  29. Not many Black Angus Steakhouse around any more. The one in Yakima was great long after SA sold out, some others were not so much. SA used to let us hunt the Springwood Ranch when he owned it.

  31. Love reading everyone’s comments. Ground Round was described exactly as I remember it…dark ambience, dry burgers, but I kind of liked it overall.

    RAX was good. There was one not far outside the main gate of NAS Pensacola. I ate there all the time as a newly stationed airman. They had a salad/taco bar I did some major damage to a couple times a week.

    Anyone recall Duffs Buffet? Looks like there’s a few locations left in Florida. There was one in my hometown up in NW Indiana and was the first buffet I ever recall going to as a kid (when going out to eat was a rare treat).

    Morrison’s Cafeterias were a favorite for my grandparents (probably yours, too) and the after-church crowds. Looks like they’re all gone.

  32. In my high school and college days, I was a cook at Sambo’s. It’s sad that the corporate leadership screwed it up. The political correctness issue was frustrating, but that’s what not killed it. I saw tonight that there is one last Sambo’s still operating in California. Maybe I should visit it (from Texas) before the Iron Curtain falls there.

    The last one standing, as far as I know, was along the waterfront in Santa Barbara. Had breakfast there in the mid-1990’s. I would be surprised if it’s still there.
