This is pretty rare, but not as rare as Ringo ever playing drums on stage without another drummer playing with him. I can’t remember the last time I’ve ever seen that, and you won’t see it here.

  4. Why do I love excellent drummers when I am a guitarist?

    Why do I love Carl Radle… a better drummer than a drummer… who played bass?

    Because I’m shit at time, brothers, and sisters. I’m shit. I can do any time signature you can ask. Any of them. But, as Ray said, “I start at 78 beats per minute, and I can fucking do it for three hours. Never once 77 beats — never once 79.”

    And he wasn’t fucking lying. Their pride isn’t time signature. Any (some) clown (haa!) can do that. The fucking problem is TIME.

    As Ginger Baker once said, and I paraphrase, “He ain’t got no fucking time!”

  6. I had a lifelong friend, Scott Sabedra, who sadly died at 38 years young, who could could switch time signatures flawlessly on the drums. And I mean it — flawlessly.

    I asked him one night, “Why the fuck are you not a professional drummer?”

    He, being Scott, asked me why I wasn’t a professional guitarist.

    I had no good answer and took another pull of my beer. I don’t think either one of us said anything for 10 minutes.

  11. Ringo is excellent. Just excellent. He fit his drumming with what the hell was going on. Just like Joe Morello, just like Ginger Baker, just like Mitch Mitchell. Just like the cat from the Who, Keith Moon. And not to forget Phil Collins and Don Henley.

  19. I love a good drummer. I love a good bass. You go around the park (so to speak) and I say to myself, “We could do this for 100 years.” We listen to one another. It’s an amazing place to be. You cease to be yourself and become something else. You exist right now, just like you exist when you fell trees. Just like you exist when you go fast on a motorcycle.

  23. …one of the saddest things I ever saw was a partial Led Zepplin reunion they broadcast many years ago. Jimmy Page sounded fine, everything else was horrible and they looked like the cat didn’t bury them completely when he was done.

    …also, it would just be weird for Robert Plant to do something like “The Lemon Song” NOW, it got kind of creepy when he got old.

    Would have been better off with the memories.

    …I pretty much can’t stand Paul McCartney after his White House gig with Fake 44, but some of the music was OK.

    When they were young.

    They ain’t young NOW.

    Time to exit, stage left. Don’t make the last memories of you an old man pathetically croaking a young man’s song.

  26. …I also used to be in love with Stevie Nicks when I was younger, but got over it as most young men do when they get old enough. A few years back, though, she was on some late-night program promoting something or other, and I tuned in briefly to see how she’d held up.

    And wished I hadn’t.

    I don’t know what they did with the 30something siren of my youth, but they brought out this 70 year old dressed like her who couldn’t sing, and topped it off by having her twirl a baton like Stevie used to in “Tusk”, and hit herself on the head with it to top it off.

    Sad.

    …should have stopped with the memories, didn’t really need the update, just reminded me that I’M old, too…

    Ever since he and that wooden legged money grabber ex-wife came up to Canada and told our native people (Indian) not to harvest seals, which they had been doing for thousands of years.
    He lives his life his way.

  32. Fleetwood Mac is in the middle of a big Aussie tour. I guess she can still sing.

    Stevie was my first rock star crush, loved her, even more, when she went solo. People are still paying big bucks to see her sing so why should she retire? They are spring chickens compared to the Rolling Stones.

    I’m sure she wishes youth was eternal, don’t we all?

  33. …I don’t want to belabor the point, @Rich Taylor, all I’m saying specific to her, who I loved back in the day too, us that time has taken much of her vocal range from her, she really can’t do the ingénue role with the youthful sexual tensions and heartbreak backstory that made her famous, and that some songs (like “Cat House Blues”) would seem pretty silly at her age.

    Yes, folks still go see them, but it’s likely a my-age-ish crowd there for the nostalgia. Not sure they’re adding fans at this point.

    I would say the same for Pat Benatar, Bonnie Tyler, Debbie Harry, and just about ALL the MALE stars of that era. No, she’s not aged as badly as Madonna, but time is dancing away from the Gypsy now, and maybe she could turn full-time to those philathropic pursuits and be the face of mature beauty for them.

    God bless her if she and the Mac still feel they can tour, I just don’t want her final bow to be when she falls off the stage and breaks her hip.

    I will always treasure the songs and the memories. There just comes a time to lower the curtain with dignity.

  34. Supernightshade, I think it has more to do with people of our age group totally disgusted with what passes off for music these days.

    Most people reflect more fondly about days past and the music of my youth and even middle age was far superior to anything these pretend artists put out now.

    No doubt you are right about nostalgia playing its part, but this goes back to my “Madworld” comment about Belle Delphine; if people, even old people can produce a product that other people will pay for, God bless ’em.

  35. …just out of curiosity, @Rich Taylor, you didn’t happen to attend a Mac’ers convention in Charlotte NC in ’88? It was a pretty big East Coast fan club event at the time, but if you’re West Side I’m sure you never heard of it…

    …I know, enough already. Probably just us, and maybe just me at this point. I just think it’s interesting to meet a kindred spirit on this subject after all these years…

  36. Never saw them in concert but bought several of their albums including a few from Stevie as a solo.

    I read Mic Fleetwood’s book.

    Pining for the bygone days of yesteryear is so easy now with youtube, but Stevie will always be my favorite 🙂
