Dog survives being hit by a car and stuck in bumper

I apologize to anyone who are distressed by imagery of animals in peril, but this one is miraculous.

(WNYT) — When the Hernas Veterinary Clinic in Schenectady, New York got a call for a dog hit by a car, they were ready for anything. When they heard the special circumstances of the case, they feared the worst. However, little Coco defied the odds.

“I couldn’t believe she survived, to be honest,” said the clinic’s Noella LaFreniere.

“It was like the perfect fit. She fit perfectly in that bumper and came out alive and it’s shocking to us. Working with the animals all these years, it’s shocking. She’s very lucky,” she said.

Police say a driver hit Coco at about 11:45 a.m. Monday.

“Saw something coming into the road, thought it was a ball, possibly an animal, struck it,” said Rotterdam Police Lieutenant Jeffrey Collins. “Stopped, checked, realized there was some damage to her vehicle, but didn’t realize that the dog had been embedded almost into the front grill or front scoop of the car.”

Police say it was about an hour and many miles later that the driver pulled over when she heard noises.

  1. That’s why my cats are formally outdoor animals. They bitch about being in the house all the time at first but they get over it. It bothers me terribly when I see a pet dead in or to the side of the road. No reason for it.

  2. It’s always a big question at my vet about whether your cat is indoor or outdoor. Mine, spoiled rotten indoors forever and always. They go out on the deck for sun and fresh air but not without me-not with bald and golden eagles nearby.

My vet says,“ Better fat than flat.”

I feel bad for the outdoor kitties who wander the neighborhood, look in our windows, looking for food and warmth. Without fail some owner will post on Next Door that their outdoor cat didn’t come home like he always does. Dude! Didn’t you hear the coyotes last night?!? Ugh.

  3. Every feral I’ve taken for vet care and neutering but one has tested positive for FIV. If you have cats that go outdoors have them vaccinated against it. You’ll probably lengthen their lives which means you get to enjoy them longer. Win win!

  4. Sometimes dogs benefit from a remarkable combination of toughness & good luck at the right moment.

Growing up we a farm dog, Shep. Part collie & part who could know. One fall my dad was plowing a corn field when the tractor stopped moving, just spinning in place. Looking to the other side there was Shep under the spinning rear wheel. He backed up off Shep and he dragged himself off into the woods, (dad didn’t care much whether Shep lived or died) dragging both rear legs. Us kids looked for him for two days not finding him. We figured he found a safe spot to die. Then 5 days later he showed up at the house. Walking on all four legs. Seemed pretty sore though. Shep lived at least another seven years, till when I went off to the USN. I don’t know what his ultimate fate was. I guess my younger brother knows. Maybe he lucked out that day from worn tire tread on the ole John Deere.
