Michelle Obama said that when her family moved to Chicago’s south side there was a “white flight,” an attitude that persists to this day in response to immigrants.
The former First Lady made her comments at an Obama Foundation Summit, held at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago on Tuesday.
“We were doing everything we were supposed to do – and better,” Obama said regarding her family at that time. “But when we moved in, white families moved out.”
“I want to remind white folks that y’all were running from us,” she then accused. “And you’re still running.”
“Because we’re no different from the immigrant families that are moving in today.”
Recent studies do indeed suggest that “white flight” is a phenomenon that persists to this day, though attributing it to the sole factor of ethnicity seems to be a bit of tunnel vision.
Really. We live in an 8 unit TH community in Houston, a new neighbor is Ondain, a lovely couple. Another is Lebanese, lovely, the is the Indian single guy from California who is a deadbeat. And our newest neighbor is Iranian. None of the old pasty people have moved out yet. Try coming to Houston and see how it works.

One of the first White Flights was from the Grand Concourse, now the ‘South Bronx’, to a place called Co-op City, that was in 1968.
The second (local) White Flight occurred when THEY (civil servants and NYC unionists that ‘left’ the Concourse) left to go to places like Rockland and Orange County(s) around 1980.

Those counties are FILLED with, for instance, NYFD and NYPD members, that refuse to raise a family next to NYC and will DRIVE to get to work.

Two recent events might make it harder to keep Whites from leaving when certain minorities move in. The first was Ferguson with its community bonfires. The second would be Baltimore where people were given room to destroy. It is not racism to avoid living where people riot.

I’m with PHenry. I don’t have acreage as such, but I’m 1/4 mile at least from any other domicile. The only neighbors I did know face to face were Darren, on the east side, and Pat and his wife Mary, on the north side. And I haven’t seen Darren face to face in over a year — although I have seen him on his tractor 300 yards away when he cut his pasture a few months ago. Pat and Mary K moved away 6 months ago. I have no idea who moved into their ranch.
I like to see my neighbors alive and well from 300 and more yards away. I wave, they don’t see me to wave back, and everything is good. The only human noises that come to my ears are aeroplanes, road tractors on O Highway, and the thrice yearly hay mow.

@ Katdog – during my drive home I listened to about the first 30 minutes of Mark Levin’s radio show this evening. A lot of statistics of the percentages of foreign language (immigrant) households in various states and larger cities in the USA. I think it has quadrupled since 1980. Doubled since 1990. Growing at a faster rate than native born English households. Generally about 25% plus/minus 10%. The total number in the USA exceeds the population of France.
His opinion is that it’s this rapid increase of foreign born residents that has turned the northern counties of Va. from red to blue. Spreading like falling dominos across Va, with Texas only lagging slightly behind. Once they and other states and larger cities go blue. No more republican president will be elected. If I recall correctly Phoenix, states of NJ and Calif. are about 38%. I think he said there are 5 states nearing 40%. And that’s why the democrats oppose border security, ICE, etc. Big changes when we have families that don’t go back generations building and defending this country. However, there are, I think, many legal immigrants into this country that primarily speak a different language in their homes that appreciate America more than native born. It’s the ratios that are troubling.
This coming from someone who lives in a 15 MILLION DOLLAR mansion.

The fuckin LIPs broke the mirrors off my car, smashed in the doors, threw their trash into my fenced yard, stabbed the only other white guy in the neighborhood, and taught my son to scream “nigger!” (a word which neither I nor my wife EVER used) at the neighbors. Wasn’t a complete window in the shopping center (which had mostly moved out) and the liquor store had bars on the windows and door.
