Why does this vintage drywall installer video fascinate me?

Is this like watching paint dry? I don’t think so. I can watch more of this.

  1. I still have my old drywall axe.
Some things you have to file under things you can not do but you love to watch pro’s do. I can’t draw or paint pictures.
You Tube is great for this.
By the way he is a lather pre sheetrock they will do a full skim coat on the walls.

  2. Plasterboard hammer. I’ve been on job sites for 25 and more years and have never seen one, except in a tool store. I always thought they were brick hammers for retards. It’s even more strange now to know that Henry James called it domiciliary pasteboard.

  3. If I had been born a man, I know for a fact that I would have been a tradesman — a craftsman. There’s a reason there aren’t more women in the trades; it’s hard, physical work that requires a lot of muscle and the ability to recover from day to day. A day of paint prep — even sanding with an orbital sander — kicks my butt and makes me sore from head to toe, and even though I’m used to it I know it would be a lot easier if I had the muscle mass.

  4. That is not a carpenter hanging drywall. That is a Lather hanging Rock Lath. At the end of the video you can see him applying the metal lath strips to the seams and corner beads. All of this is the prep work to apply plaster to the walls.

  5. You know why these guys were so productive? They weren’t looking at their phones every 2 minutes or have to leave to visit the probation office or worry about ICE showing up.

Better figure out an occupation that has to be done – that cannot be done by a machine (a machine that doesn’t demand a pay raise, more benefits, o.t. pay, or more holidays off work). You might only have ten years left to find it.
