Last remaining survivor of the Hindenburg disaster dies at 90

ABC13: LACIONIA, New Hampshire — The last remaining survivor of the Hindenburg disaster, Werner Gustav Doehner has died at age 90.

Doehner was the only person left of the 62 passengers and crew who survived the May 6, 1937, fire that killed his father, sister and 34 others.

As the 80th anniversary approached in 2017, Doehner told The Associated Press he and his parents, older brother and sister were returning from a vacation in Germany on the 804-foot-long zeppelin to Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey.

As the Hindenburg arrived, flames began to flicker on top of the ship. Hydrogen, exposed to air, fueled an inferno.

“Suddenly, the air was on fire,” Doehner recalled. read more

  1. MJA — What made you post this? It’s kinda weird because just a couple of nights ago I listened to an audio compilation of five Titanic survivors who gave riveting accounts of their ordeal. Their descriptions were so detailed it was as though it happened yesterday. It really brought history alive. For some reason it never occurred to me that Titanic survivors would have been interviewed in the intervening years. Now I have to go in search of Hindenberg survivors’ recollections.

  2. AbigailAdams, yes, the survivors of the Titanic have been interviewed quite a bit since then. Many of them went to yearly Remembrance meetings.

As an aside, in the film “Dunkirk” Mr Dawson, the character, is based on Charles Lightoller’s actions in the evacuation of Dunkirk.

Lightoller and his crew brought back 127 Servicemen in his motor yacht SUNDOWNER.

  3. @Anonymous Erik — Thanks for that! I’ve recently been enjoying immersing myself in things other than politics (well, Democrat politics to be specific). There’s so many other topics to explore. The only Titanic survivor I’ve researched is Edith Rosenbaum who was a fashion buyer and was returning with 17 trunks full of haute couture clothing from Paris for her clients in NY. She was a also journalist writing for Women’s Wear Daily.

  4. Seems like, states with the smaller blue land mass areas are located in the largely populated cities. They are generally Democrat and can easily outvote the less populated (but larger rural) red/purple land mass areas.

State-mandated electoral colleges should be seriously considered for a more representative election, else the cities (blue or red) could generally decide every election outcome.

See, for example, Louisiana (posted above)
