France: Transport workers strike could be the biggest in decades

France24-

France looks set for potentially its biggest strike in decades.

France is bracing itself for a widespread transport strike starting on Thursday, December 5. This looks set to be the most comprehensive strike the country has experienced in decades. Many are predicting the country will be forced to a standstill. It is possible the strikes could last until Christmas.

France may be a country with a reputation for protest, but this planned walkout is on an large scale and will affect the daily life of many. All public transport systems will be affected. Many trains have been cancelled, others are running at drastically reduced levels.

The last strike of this potential size was in 1995, when the country was frozen for three weeks.

International travel will be also affected. In an anticipatory measure, Eurostar has cancelled all trains to and from Paris from December 5th at least until December 9th. Around one fifth of all flights into and out of France will be cancelled on Thursday.

At the heart of this debate is a controversial reform of the country’s state pension system. read more

  1. This is gonna put a damper on terrorist attacks in France.

Without public transit or gas for the car, they’ll have to go back to riding camels. That will make them LST’s.

  2. That’s why I just sneer every time some liberal starts gassing on about how we need more public transport like Europe. No. No we do not. I’ll stick with going where I want to go, WHEN I want to go there, in my obnoxiously loud 500 horsepower AMERICAN MADE sports car that is most definitely NOT fuel efficient. Go park your burning Tesla in front of a fucking train, hippie.

  3. Wow! News from France. It’s been so long. Last I heard Macron was gassing civilians. The UN loved it. Shooting crowds of protesters. Pooh Bear thought it was wise and measured.

Oh, wait. That’s right. I live in a UN country with a free press. I never heard any of that.

    > If the socialists ever become the majority in this country, we will be seeing this and much more.

Oh noes! You won’t be seeing any of it. Not even with your own lying eyes.

  5. Too bad the country doesn’t have a Maggie Thatcher or Ronald Reagan. Macron ought to give it five days and then if he can herd enough of the parlimentary cats vote them back to work. If they refuse, send in the army (or maybe the Foreign Legion) to take over what they can and start firing the workers. The railway will be a mess for quite some time but it would give the government a chance to hire and train (slowly to be sure) a new workforce without all these crazy benefits. It could take 3 or 4 years to get back to peak efficiency but it would be worth it.

  6. They take away your car so you depend on public transportation and then go on strike to mess up your life. That way you’ll definitely want to give the transportation union more of your money so you can get on with your life. Assholes.
