A Delta Airlines jet flying from Los Angeles to Shanghai on Tuesday was forced to make an emergency landing at LAX — and dumped jet fuel on the city, including on children playing outside at Park Avenue Elementary School in Cudahy.
The Los Angeles Times reported:
Delta Flight 89 had taken off from LAX with 149 passengers and was en route to Shanghai when it turned around and headed back to the airport because of engine trouble.

The pilots took the plane — a Boeing 777 — north over Malibu within four minutes after takeoff at 11:32 a.m., according to Flightradar24, a firm that maintains airline path data across the globe.

According to Flightradar24, Tuesday’s flight never got above 8,000 feet and was at about 2,300 feet when it passed over Park Avenue Elementary School in Cudahy at 11:53 a.m. The plane showered jet fuel on schoolchildren below.

..seriously, though, these things are VERY controlled and the plane is supposed to ask ATC for permission even to dump fuel, and is typically routed to avoid this kind of thing. You can’t dump fuel quickly, it takes awhile and you usually have to go into a holding pattern to do it, so if youre emergency is THAT extreme, your flight manual ALSO has instructions for conducting an overweight landing to deal with it.
I bet we’ll find an Affirmative Action hire, probably with poor English skills, in the cockpit, at ATC, or both. This was kind of stupid and should not have happened unless it had a hole on the fuel tank, but if it IS because of a Protected Persuasion, you can be SURE the NTSB report will be delayed for YEARS and then blame something ELSE…

Chances are the teachers over reacted and told all the kids they’ve just been poisoned.

Dumping jet fuel on school kids was bad enough, but then throwing lit flares out the door was completely unnecessary.
The pilot was ordered to dump it above the school so as not to let any fall on the homeless encampments.
The poor kids, with the stringent new water restrictions they won’t even be able to rinse it off.

Throw the clothes away, take a shower, wash off with tomato juice, shower again, and you’re as good as new. I’m serious about throwing the clothes away. Unless you have a washer and dryer dedicated for greasers you’ll be sorry if you try and wash them. Here is a handy hint, if you have a load of greasers that you intend to wash, pour in a can of coke, they will come out sparkling clean.
