WorldCom’s Bernie Ebbers Let Out Early In December, Dies In February

Before there was a Bernie Madoff (responsible for stealing upwards of $18 billion of investor’s money) there was Bernie Ebbers, co-founder and CEO of WorldCom that collapsed in 2002 after disclosure of Ebbers’ creative accounting. Ebbers had served 13 years of his 25 year prison sentence when he was released on ground of compassion this last December.

Once known as the “Telecom cowboy” for the size and audacity of his acquisitions he orchestrated in the 1990s, “In 2013, Portfolio.com and CNBC named Ebbers as the fifth-worst CEO in American history. In 2009, Time named him the tenth most corrupt CEO of all time.” More
