Greyhound to stop allowing immigration checks on buses.
Greyhound, the nation’s largest bus company, said Friday it will stop allowing Border Patrol agents without a warrant to board its buses to conduct routine immigration checks.
The company’s announcement came one week after The Associated Press reported on a leaked Border Patrol memo confirming that agents can’t board private buses without the consent of the bus company. Greyhound had previously insisted that even though it didn’t like the immigration checks, it had no choice under federal law but to allow them.
In an emailed statement, the company said it would notify the Department of Homeland Security that it does not consent to unwarranted searches on its buses or in areas of terminals that are not open to the public — such as company offices or any areas a person needs a ticket to access.
Greyhound said it would provide its drivers and bus station employees updated training regarding the new policy, and that it would place stickers on all its buses clearly stating that it does not consent to the searches.
In that case, start getting warrants if you need them.
“Our primary concern is the safety of our customers and team members, and we are confident these changes will lead to an improved experience for all parties involved.”
So, if CBP is pursuing a criminal illegal who may be en route somewhere USA, Greyhound will protect i.e. harbor the criminal from arrest? And that’s safe for the riders?
What criminal bullshit. Now we have sanctuary buses.
Start searching ALL busses and ALL terminals.
No exceptions.
DHS needs to issue one open search warrant, good for 12 months, to search any bus & any terminal at any time.
Of course then watch the 9th Circus jump in & block it.

Greyhound obviously knows who their clientele is. CBP just needs to check the people when they get on or off the bus. Oh, and F-you, Greyhound.

Time for DOT to do very, very thorough inspections on their entire fleet. Set up customs/immigration stops on all their routes. Customs has broad jurisdiction and doesn’t require warrants I do believe.
Throw tear gas grenades on to the bus, check all the passengers before they get back on.
Have the president write an order that any bus may be stopped at any time to check passengers, failure to comply will automatically suspend all permits and licenses, A fine of $100,000 for the first offense. Three offenses you are out of business. Fine doubles for each offense.
Pres. Trump: lower the boom on this renegade corporation and put it out of business if it denies the Border Patrol the right to inspect its busses.
I haven’t ridden a Greyhound bus since 1977, and have no use for it. The gov’t should force them to use their busses to take illegals back to the border and dump ’em all out on the other side.

Greyhound will place stickers on its buses stating it does not consent to searches. Well, if the stickers are in Spanish we’ll know they are meant for riders, not BP agents. That would mean this is all a BS issue – a PR campaign – to increase ridership.
Also, so it was only after it was leaked that Greyhound became aware that searches require a warrant? Greyhound’s legal department doesn’t know the law?

I think that the last time I took a Greyhound bus was back in the early 70’s. My younger brother who drove me down there was appalled by all the queers who used to hang around the old Greyhound bus depot in downtown Spokane.
Makes sense to me. Who the hell rides the bus anymore? Can’t be pissing off their customer base now, can they?
A lot of people fresh from jail ride Greyhound, too.
Greyhound was charged in 2000-2001 for running a bus line in Denver that was running wetbacks from the border to Denver and then points beyond. “Golden State” bus line I think.
So, yeah, they know who their customers are.
If they don’t need a warrant to search a private auto under “probable cause”, they sure as hell don’t need one for PUBLIC transportation.
I’m thinking that without a warrant greyhound has no obligation to allowing searches.

Traveling on Federally funded highways, seems like a safety issue to be transporting criminals on Federal Highways to parts unknown.
If Greyhound doesn’t want to cooperate, that’s fine, but every time an illegal is caught or a drug smuggler is caught using Greyhound for transportation, charge greyhound with adding and abetting, and as an accessory after the fact. After a while, Greyhound will be begging CBP and DEA to inspect their buses.
Inform Greyhound that if an illegal is caught on a bus, the bus will be confiscated just like a pimp’s Cadillac.
Law enforcers need to have a specific reasonable suspicion to stop a vehicle on public roadways. To search a vehicle legally, they need a specific probable cause. Anything or anyone confiscated or arrested after a search without probable cause, when appearing in court, can have the whole thing thrown out.
A search warrant may not be specifically necessary (I’m not sure I like that much but it is established law) but probable cause IS necessary, and “a lot of illegals ride Greyhound” is not even reasonable suspicion, much less probable cause.
I’m on Greyhound’s side on this one.

I am appalled and saddened the majority of people commenting on this thread concur with allowing government agencies to conduct searches without a warrant. So you just forget about the 4th Amendment because such searches align with your politics?
