Hal Ketcham did a very good version too. A little more sedate.
The song has some good reverb or something going on with the guitar part.
The words make me think of a soldier about to be shipped overseas.

TimBuktu: If I am not mistaken, that was produced by Sly Stone. A friend and I used to play that many moons ago, me on bass and my friend on guitar. I usually did the singing, such as it was.
I never thought about the guy going to war. There are many songs where the guy going (or just coming back) is the backdrop of the song.

I listened to 3 songs on the car radio recently (usually I do not turn on the radio) one by Pink, one by Fergie, and one by some outfit called Riot at the Disco.
None had a tune, let alone a pretty tune that makes you want to listen to it over and over again. A song has to have catchy tune or I’m tuning out.

Bad Brad, when they played Spirit In The Sky in the midst of the British stoner movie Saving Grace and the guy is outside peeing and the greenhouse where they’re growing dope lights up like a kaleidoscope on steroids and the stoner almost feels like he’s having an epiphany from God. My wife and I were laughing so hard that we lost it in gut busting laughter. My wife and I laughed hysterically at that and the 2 little old English ladies who got stoned thinking they were drinking tea which it wasn’t and got goofy with the googly eyes, laughing hysterically and getting the munchies. It’s a great highly recommended British comedy almost as good as Waking Ned Devine. The character of Doc Martin on PBS was one of the major stoners in this movie.

I was born in Hawthorne California. Life was like Beach Blanket Bingo. Teenagers would strap their surf boards onto their bikes and pedal to the beach. And it was one garage band after another. All beach music. Dick Dale, the Safaris, etc. Some of them were pretty damn good. I always wondered if any of those musicians ever hit it big.
