First LA Mayor Eric Garcetti released 1,700 inmates. Then the LA Sheriff tried to shut down all gun stores. Next, Garcetti appointed neighborhood monitors and threatened to shut down electricity and water services to non-compliant citizens. In his most recent action, the mayor admits to using Big Tech to monitor the location of residents and track their coronavirus compliance.
During an interview with Chris Cuomo [segment @14:19 to 14:28] Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti discussing the ‘stay-at-home’ order says (emphasis mine):
…”but this has been marvelously embraced by 99.9 percent of people; we see it in the traffic data, we see it in the cell phone data; but we’re going to hunt down that last point-one percent and say: ‘you’ve gotta get inside, you gotta cut it out, and you gotta distance”…

Al, they can track a smart phone when it’s turned off. Some aspects may require support from the manufacturer but I believe once you put your ID into it, it is more you than you are,
@joe6pak – I hope putting a smart phone in a steel lock box would work to make it untrackable. I keep one in my car for occasions when have to temporarily stash my pistol.

Here in Washington, the State Patrol and several city/county police departments have announced on TV that there will NO stops of people on the road. They will demand that a group of people disperse if gathered in a park, etc.

practically any phone, including flip phones, can be tracked. any phone offered by any major (or minor) carrier (AT&T, Verizon, etc.) are programmed for it

Well, you might as wrap your whole vehicle in a faraday cage because there is enough gizmos and gadgets in just about every vehicle that can be found to give someone a signal of where you are at. That’s why I’m still looking for a 93 Suburban with a 454. That was my favorite vehicle. I put over 300,000 miles on and had no trouble. No on board computers, no Onstar, just a hell of a good rig. They are hard to find for some reason.
@Ann Nonymous Prime – Even a basic cell phone can be tracked if it’s turned on. It will be “talking” to cell towers within range so that the system knows how to route incoming phone calls. At the very least, a plain cell phone’s movements can be tracked by the cells it moves through. Granularity is likely fractions of a kilometer.
A smart phone with GPS and wi-fi can be tracked with a granularity of meters.
This much I do know. I just didn’t know about the airplane mode.
Based on what I’ve read, a few wraps of heavy duty aluminum foil around a phone acts as a faraday cage that blocks signals. The heavy duty foil is sturdy enough that it can be reused several times and it is relatively cheap as well.
I use a pre-paid flip phone that stays in my car which is generally parked in my driveway for days at a time. If things get bad (worse than I perceive in my rural area at this time), I’ll use the foil as my signal blocker.

Saw this today, not just a goobermer. Apparently, there’s open resource that tracks anonymous cell phone GPS pings. Like the NSA, only in a lite version. Hilarious how all the cesspools comply, no thought given that rural areas travel further to buy toilet paper.
The faraday cage has been around for a very long time and works great for your cell phone, but as soon as it leaves that protective field the grubbermint has your location, even if the phone is still off so why bother to pay the outrageous sums of money to own one to begin with when your old reliable wall-mounted rotary phone at home still works fine to make a goddamn phone call?
As far as your other main grubbermint tracking device AKA your “car” goes you can either take the chance that the obvious one is the only one installed in your vehicle and rip it out OR you can use a pre-1990 car to get around in since GPS was not invented yet for commercial use.
Next up will be the door to door gun confiscations for the “safety” of everyone and don’t worry, it will only be temporary until the “crisis” is over then you can apply to buy your guns back from the state if they deem you worthy of owning one and you can afford their extortion.
Put your phone on a drone and send it out a few times a day on auto return. Give them something to watch.
If you’re trying to avoid tracking you cannot use the phone at all since any blocking efforts are defeated and you are tracked the instant you use it.
So if you are not going to use it why not just leave it somewhere else where you want those tracking you to think you are?
Or get a burner they can’t trace to you personally for when you don’t want to be tracked but have to have a phone available to use. (that’s a fairly cheap thing to do but takes a bit of effort and stealth on your part)
This phone tracking is the tip of the iceberg. Pay attention to the big picture. Neighborhood monitors are the key thing. Eager volunteer snoops.

Garcetti didn’t originate this. There are a bunch of consultants traveling around indoctrinating and training state, county and municipal administrators on how to be a good dictator with a smile.
Hate to pop peoples bubbles but Faraday cages are only useful for blocking electro magnetic charges. And a properly functioning Faraday requires a earth ground. Removing your battery from your phone is the only sure way to stop tracking. It’s becoming very difficult to find phones with removable batteries.
Most commercial Faraday enclosures are made of wire mesh or screen. Chain link fence will even work. Thats not going to block a signal going out. Put a portable radio in a metal box and it will still probably function although the receiving properties may be diminished.
It’s not paranoia if they really are tracking you.
Also, don’t forget about credit card transaction tracking.
Remove battery, then smash to bits.
There’s a battery or capacitor that keeps the innards active when the removable battery is taken out.
iPhones don’t have removable batteries.

Sure a flip phone can be tracked but only your location, not your search habits, spending, etc. No internet.
Pull the battery, put it in a metal can, and pay cash. It helps.
This is why I don’t own any wireless devices. No smart phone, no cell phone, nada. Correct that; my home landline has a battery powered handset for it. Mobile phones are nothing but electronic leashes. None for me, thanks.
