Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry, along with assistance from State Senate Health and Welfare Chairman Fred Mills, has announced a major donation by Amneal Pharmaceuticals to help respond to the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
Landry announced that Amneal will donate 400,000 hydroxychloroquine sulfate tablets to the State of Louisiana. Landry said:
On behalf of Louisiana, I want to thank Amneal for this generous donation. It is important we all work together to help solve the COVID-19 Coronavirus crisis. We must come together as Louisianans and as Americans. This donation from Amneal demonstrates their strong effort to be a good corporate citizen in our Nation.
In his announcement, Landry also reminded everyone of the social distancing guidelines that have been put into place.

WeUs the People…say, to Antarctica…A friend, who has Lupus, was freaking out a couple of days ago because she couldn’t get her prescription filled. The fact that countless people are being helped isn’t much consolation when you are in misery and fear of dying because your drug has been found to treat a new disease. Fortunately she was able to get a 3-month supply yesterday.
The crucial question right now is availability of tests, drugs, masks, ventilators, etc. If we had all of those in plentiful supply I think the end of this week would show a dramatic downturn – but until we have sufficient supply people can’t be properly treated or protected. Supply is what will end this mess, not quarantine.
So what is the deal?
Is hydroxychloroquine a cure, or not?
I’ve read of the guy in France and the mysterious Dr. Z from New York both having almost perfect success.
But that’s just two anecdotal stories in three weeks.
And I read a lot of news.
What is the truth on this?
If they are junk chink drugs, and people die, who gets the credit?
@Mr. Anth Ropy — It’s not as though there’s a bright line separating “anecdotes” from “scientific conclusions”. As you add more and more anecdotes to the results of using this medicine, the evidence becomes gradually more persuasive.
There are problems with clinical trials when the need for answers is acute. Drug trials, in addition to being expensive, take a very long time when you’re in the middle of a pandemic.
The other big problem is the ethical one. It is unethical to conduct a study where everyone involved doesn’t receive at a minimum the current standard of care. I’ve read that a lot of doctors who have used hydroxychloroquine are now saying that given their experience and results they regard that NOT using the drug would be unethical.
The guy in France did a second trial (of sorts, as there was no placebo group). 80 patients, I believe one was in advanced stages and died, another inconclusive but the remaining 78 had the same success. Also, use of this drug for general coronavirus has been documented since SARS 2005.
“Is hydroxychloroquine a cure, or not?”
A treatment is not quite the same as a cure, this drug is a treatment that appears to be more effective than other treatments at keeping people from dying from it and shortening the duration and severity of the illness.
