Preventive VetXylitol: More Dangerous Than Chocolate, Yet Less Well Known About

Do you know what xylitol is? Are you (fully) aware of the danger it poses to dogs? You wouldn’t be alone if you answered “no” to either, or even both of these questions. In our ongoing Pet Safety Awareness survey over 50% of the respondents weren’t aware of xylitol or the danger it poses to dogs until they took the survey! By comparison, you’d be hard pressed to find a dog owner who isn’t aware that chocolate can be toxic to dogs. Right?

  1. Thanks for the pet health update, Claudia.
Our veterinarian is very up to date on a lot of these things and she sent warning letters to her entire client list.
I couldn’t ask for a better group of animal docs to be looking out for our crew.

  2. I hate fake sugar gum (I’m diabetic) so I won’t go near it.
Real gum is harder to find now.

As for chocolate. Love it. But when my dogs get their bday cupcakes, it has carob in it in place of chocolate. Depending what my dogs are in the mood for. LOL!

  3. Every dog I’ve owned has at one time or another gotten chocolate and none were sick other than the idiot that ate 5 pounds of Halloween candy wrappers included and spent the next week crapping it out.

Maybe. Years ago, when my (80 lb) mutt was around, he ate about 1/2 pound of chocolate-covered caramels with absolutely no ill effects. The candies were individually foil-wrapped, and he managed to get them unwrapped before he ate them. At different times he consumed a bowl of meatballs and a pumpkin pie. Couldn’t get mad at him; he was too cute. His best defense.
