Pier 1 Imports To Liquidate

Chicago Tribune

Pier 1 Imports, the seller of wicker chairs and scented candles, said it will go out of business and permanently close all 540 of its stores.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based company said Tuesday that it was unable to find a buyer for its business after filing for bankruptcy protection in February.

It will start going-out-of-business sales as soon as it can reopen stores that have been temporarily shut due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In a note on its website, the company said it is seeking court approval “to begin an orderly wind-down of the company’s retail operations” and said that it “expects to continue serving customers in its stores through early fall 2020. Store closing dates will vary by location.” More

  1. My pet peeve: “… stores that have been temporarily shut due to the coronavirus pandemic.”
NO! NO! NO! They were NOT closed due to the epidemic, they were closed due to the insane lockdown orders!

  2. They were already on this path and made the decision in Feb before lockdowns. I never understood this store. Like buying literal cheap crap from India and paying a premium. And there is nothing there that doesn’t look cheap and none of it is essential. And they had big box real estate costs. Can’t believe they lasted this long.

  3. Pier One was my sanctuary. My ‘oh that’s so pretty I hope it goes on sale’ interior decor paradise.

I love the shabby chic and country French look that they did.

    IM SO UPSET. 🙁

  4. I’ve only been in a Pier 1 once. I was looking for a wicker basket and although they had them, they were ridiculously priced. I went to Hobby Lobby and found one very similar to the one I liked there for half the price.

  5. The only thing I ever bought at Pier 1 was a small ceramic dish with a cover. I wanted something to store my kitty’s (Asher), ashes. I glued the lid shut and it’s been sitting on my dresser until I moved back to Michigan. He moved with me to Minnesota, so I wanted to bring him back with me. I will bury him on the hillside of my new house.

  6. It’s a cute store. The linens, dish ware, etc. But they are overpriced and they’ve been bleeding money and closing stores regularly for almost a decade now. (I used to be on their mailing list and they would announce store closures and mass clearances) They would have saved themselves had they just gone online and or closed half their stores a while back.
