FOX:
The Big Idea is a series that asks top lawmakers and officials to discuss their moonshot — what’s the one proposal, if politics and polls and even price tag were not an issue, they’d implement to change the country for the better?
Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., says he doesn’t think that politicians should get to make careers out of working in Washington.
When the former two-term Florida governor, who before that worked in the private sector and before that was a member of the U.S. Navy, ran for U.S. Senate, working to impose term limits on Congress was one of his top pledges.
The term limits issue helped him unseat former Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., who was first elected to serve in Congress in the 1970s. Now he’s back at it, but the proposal is one that faces significant obstacles to implementation, especially from Congress itself, whose members have not historically been eager to intentionally put themselves out of a job. more
Gators are cute and harmless when they’re little. But if you leave them in the swamp too long…
There is more ‘congress’ – we are at war with it. Our government is a rat infested shithole looking to loot us and enslave us.
Good idea, Scott, but too little too late.
A military coup is coming. Barr will personally surrender the White House and betray PDJT.
We slept too long, and trusted the GOP too long. It’s all over but the death throes.
As a matter of principle, I don’t approve of congressional term limits. If we’re going to have democratically elected representatives, we should be able to vote for whoever we want.
As a practical matter, though, I would LOVE to see congressional term limits established. The sad truth is that we DO NOT get to vote for whoever we want and have those votes counted. So, yeah. Throw the bums out after a max of two terms for House members and ONE TERM for Senate.
And as for the Senate, repeal the 17th Amendment and go back to having state legislatures pick their U.S. Senators. Popular election of senators has been a disaster.
This is a really bad idea that we would come to regret very quickly. Once term limited, each congressman or senator would become a lame duck, suddenly able to do whatever to feather his nest, or worse, those of his biggest donors with total impunity. Remember Corkers games once he announced he wasn’t running again?
Don’t think the Founders didn’t consider the merits of term limits. But they didn’t put them in for a reason. Every time the Constitution is altered the beauty of the original plan is underscored the unintended consequences that crop up.
@Anonymous
“…do whatever to feather his nest…”
They’re doing that now.
Who needs term limits? An apathetic electorate gets exactly the government it deserves. We seem to be much better at complaining about government than taking any active part in eliminated the scum from it.
While you’re at it, limit the influence of lobbyists, both in ability to influence with money and also ghost-writing legislation in secret. If this is not done in parallel then they will figure out some way to cycle pawns though congress, just like they have been cycling pawns through the presidency.
This was the only bing part of Newt’s CONTRACT that was not enacted! Guess why?!@?!?$%?
Liberal GOP liars! First and foremost, man Gore honestly said( in the VP debate of ’96) was ,”the most liberal man in Congress for 50 years.” DOLE. Other UNIPARTY GOPe helped but Dole lead the war; and won!
Were I Bob with 50 years in Congress. I would fight term limits too! But my 50 years would have been conservative not leftist!
Professional lobbying should be outlawed.
Promise the congress critters a lot of money and fame after one or two terms and they’ll leave on their own.
I don’t know he is handling his Senate salary, but when he was Governor he only took $1 a month, retired the governor’s aircraft, flew his own plane, and commuted from home instead of living in Governor’s Mansion.
I also want term limits, nine months is way too long.
Raise the voting age.
Close the public schools.
Move the capital to a desert.
Institute dormitory housing for congress with curfew.
Criminalize insider trading for congress.
Criminalize lobbying.
Term limits.
GPS chip all congressmen
Line item veto.
End continuing resolution.
Limit any bill to 10 pages.
That’s a good start
Why should Congress take us seriously when we demand term limits for ALL congressmen? We are given the opportunity to limit the term of just ONE congressman every two years, and most of us don’t do it.
Term limits for politicians won’t do any good without term limits for bureaucrats.
f term limits. immediate recall @ any local/state/federal level with 1-day notice to GTFO, no appeals. to include justices, da’s.
Need to drastically reduce budgets and fix them, (i.e. no automatic increases) for all government agencies.
Let the useless bureaucrats, who regulate us to death, feel the pain with dismissals and paltry budgets.
Streamline civil service to end protections and permit easy dismissals.
Cap salaries below the marketplace. Make it punitive to work for Uncle Sam.
Require alphabet-soup agencies have a fixed maximum headcount.
