Powerful earthquake shakes southern, central Mexico; Guatemala issues tsunami alert

Deseret News: MEXICO CITY — A powerful earthquake centered near the southern Mexico resort of Huatulco appeared to have killed at least one person, swayed buildings in Mexico City and sent thousands fleeing into the streets.

Oaxaca state Gov. Alejandro Murat told the Televisa network that he had a preliminary report of one person killed and one injured in a building collapse in Crucecita, part of Huatulco. He did not provide details. Otherwise most reports were of minor damage, he said.

Seismic alarms sounded midmorning with enough warning for residents to exit buildings. Power was knocked out to some areas.

Helicopters flew over downtown Mexico City and police patrols sounded their sirens.

Groups of people still milled around in close proximity on streets and sidewalks in some neighborhoods of the capital about an hour after the quake. Many were not wearing masks despite past appeals from municipal officials for them to do so as a way to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. more here

SNIP: Did they just chastise these poor people for fleeing without masks on??? How inhuman can you be?

Also, in the article title, they misspelled Guatemala. I don’t know if that’s an AP mistake or the Deseret News, but they have paid and or professional staff. All I’m saying.

  1. I didn’t feel a thing, but I’ll keep an eye out for the TSUNAMI! We get a lot of those in southern Arizona! It’s 1 pm and only 115 degrees, it would probably evaporate before it got too far inland. 🙂
