Daily Caller: Two Republican senators introduced an amendment Wednesday to get rid of Columbus Day and make Juneteenth a new federal holiday.
Republican Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson and Republican Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford introduced the amendment to legislation introduced by Republican Texas Sen. John Cornyn which would make Juneteenth a federal holiday.
“In response to a bipartisan effort to give federal workers another day of paid leave by designating Juneteenth a federal holiday, we have offered a counterproposal that does not put us further in debt,” Johnson said Wednesday, Fox News reported. “We support celebrating emancipation with a federal holiday, but believe we should eliminate a current holiday in exchange. We chose Columbus Day as a holiday that is lightly celebrated, and least disruptive to Americans’ schedules.” more

Juneteenth would be too close to the 4th of July, Independence Day so that
Juneteenth would be coopted as black independence day and become the new Independence day for blacks only while the rest of us would lose our freedom to celebrate our true independence on the 4th of July. If I am reading this right, Sen. Cornyn proposed adding a new federal holiday for Juneteenth. There are already 11 of those, at least that I can find. They don’t need any more days off.
On the other hand, if we are talking about congress, I would support giving them 360 days off every year, even if it isn’t a recognized federal holiday.
But to remove Columbus Day for this? Nope, get rid of the entire bill.

I’m from Oklahoma as well and I never voted for Lankford. I tried real hard in the Senate primaries to get people to not vote for him, but I couldn’t convince the idiots who thought he was the best man for the job because either A, he had been in D.C. and knew how it worked or B Falls Creek. I can’t remember now if I left that race blank in the general or voted for a third party, because that’s what I always do when the person chosen for me is a POS.
He will be reelected though, because that’s just how stupid Okie Republicans are, they’ll keep you there if you keep on running.
As for Trump, I have been nothing but disappointed in him since this entire virus shit started. I will vote for him of course because the other choice is Biden, but I’m not as certain as others that he’s got this in the bag. Sen. Paul posted up a bill, Stopping Improper Payments to Deceased People Act, in the middle of others’ word-salad pieces. Among other things, it mandated stopping accidentally sending checks to dead people, and provided for improved detection, prevention, and recovery of improper payments to deceased individuals. I like it!
It passed unanimously, only to be immediately followed by parliamentarian maneuvering to discover, not only what they just passed, but IF they had passed it. An answer which even the Chair could not forthwith provide!
