Expert: COVID-19 mass fear, unemployment unleash ‘unprecedented assault on mental health’

Just The News: We all know that COVID-19 has become a global pandemic that poses serious, potentially fatal, health dangers to those in high-risk groups and affects the lives of all of us in myriad ways on a daily basis.

Less widely understood is that there is a growing body of new research to suggest that the effects of mass fear and historic economic disruption are turning into a mental health crisis of potentially grave proportions.

“This is an unprecedented assault on mental health,” says Roger S. McIntyre, the lead author of a study looking at potential suicide rates due to COVID-19. “I could not find anything in the history books that’s quite like this.”  more

  1. I can believe this. Without a doubt, I can honestly say that the lockdowns and fewer in-person interactions with my friends have weighed on me. I hate to say it, but I can see that my alcohol consumption has gone up (I never drink when I am out with my friends) and that I am lazier than I was a few months ago (and the beer belly will attest to that :S ). I hate to think about what all of my students have gone through over the past few months without being allowed to get together with their friends.

However, being with the folks on this site and enjoying the responses to the various posts by all of you, has definitely helped.

    Thanks everyone!

  2. Meanwhile all my teacher friends would rather the children suffer, even kill themselves rather than risk a disease which for most is either less deadly or slightly more deadly than the annual flu which everyone just lives with. It is painful to watch them say ‘Yes, it is disastrous for the children, but more importantly I am afraid.’

Were I a teacher I would go back in a second. I have no fear of the virus.

  3. @Left Coast Dan – We have never met, but anecdotally, I fit your last statement – I will go back as soon as the schools open. I am even in one of the risk categories – I am above the age limit. I also know of two others that agree with us, though that is obviously a very small minority of teachers.

I will not rant on it, but please realize that not all teachers fit the general leftist mode, or always agree with the unions, though, from my experience, many do. Again, that is anectdotal.

  4. I have relied on my faith in God during this time of lockdown. He is still with me daily, and during those times of quiet reflection, I have gotten to know and trust him even more fully.

I am in a high risk group. I am not afraid, because this life is not the only life. I want to live my earthly life without fear, and have been largely successful, by not being foolish, yet not giving in to others rules and paranoia.

    My personal rules:
Wear a mask if the establishment you NEED to enter requires one.
Avoid any unnecessary places where mandatory masking is the rule.
Speak out about the actual viability of mask wearing, when opportunities present themselves, but do not argue with the true believers – it’s futile and no one needs to be shamed – not them, not me.
Visit IOTW regularly for humor, information, and friends who share my beliefs.
Pray for the health and safety of President Trump.

  5. Being hounded by debt collector’s and trying to feed and house a family while out of work tends to ratchet up the stress level just a tad.
Thanks for the study, it wouldn’t have occurred to anyone otherwise.

  6. Not just suicide, being in a constant state of anxiety is likely to lead to high blood pressure, heart disease and other illnesses. Like being in a permanent flight response. Your body isn’t meant to be in a constant state of stress and fear.

  7. Make yourself walk, run, hike regularly and keep your friends close

    Be ready to relocate

  8. I went out on my usual Sunday 10 mile hike today on the local bike paths. Most people looked normal enough. But I did see three guys at different points who were exercising by themselves with masks on when it was 92 degrees out with 50% humidity. Two were biking and one was jogging, of a sort. The jogger looked like someone who had no business jogging, too fat and too soft and too hairy. Whenever I see people outside, by themselves, with masks on in a state where that is not required, I’m sure that I’m looking at an absolutely psychotic and batshit crazy fuck.

  9. Well yeah, that’s whe whole point. panice is fake, the danger is fake, the virus is fake, but the evil is real, and the brain dead gullibility of an entire nation is terrifying. Put on your masks an feel righteous my little Eloi. Be too afraid to live, and you won’t.

This statement alone is BS. Less than 1 million deaths worldwide. I bet more people die from infected hang nails every year. I will not wear a mask and I will not take a vaccine.
