‘Sobering’ report shows hardening attitudes against media

NEW YORK (AP) — The distrust many Americans feel toward the news media, caught up like much of the nation’s problems in the partisan divide, only seems to be getting worse.

That was the conclusion of a “sobering” study of attitudes toward the press conducted by Knight Foundation and Gallup and released Tuesday.

Nearly half of all Americans describe the news media as “very biased,” the survey found.

“That’s a bad thing for democracy,” said John Sands, director of learning and impact at the Knight Foundation. “Our concern is that when half of Americans have some sort of doubt about the veracity of the news they consume, it’s going to be impossible for our democracy to function.” more

  1. “41% of Americans have a great deal of confidence in the ability of the media to report the news fairly”

In other words, 41% of Americans are delusional. That is the most shocking conclusion of this survey.

  2. There are few industries where the mass populace actively roots for their business failure.
But any time there is an article about a paper going belly up, mass newsroom lay-offs, financial losses, there are hundreds of comments below celebrating.
The real shame is that those of us celebrating media’s demises would instead be supportive if that media were an honest player, exposing corruption on BOTH sides

  4. I saw this on Fox today and they tried to be “unbiased” by saying that the right is just as responsible as the left.

I commend them on trying, but they are against the rest of the stations on the left. Don’t give in. Admit that the left is much more predominant in the media and leave it at that.

  5. @Ronterf:

“it’s going to be impossible for our democracy to function.” yea the way they want it to.

The key word in that quotation is “our” — not your and my constitutional republic, but John Sands’ and his ilk’s creature they aspire to make function their way, for them, and against you and me.

BTW, how does one harden tool steel?

  6. I can’t imagine what the actual poll numbers were before weighting but considering how many morons actually consume msm it should not have been difficult to get a 100% sample size
